Capers not coming

As the Cowboys close in on hiring Brett Maxie as assistant secondary coach, they now know they will not have Dom Capers on Wade Phillips staff.

Capers told our Calvin Watkins he has decided against accepting a position with the Cowboys early Monday morning. Capers talked to the Cowboys two weeks ago about possibly coming in as a consultant.

"Wade's got a great staff," Capers said. "Some of the guys that Wade has I've worked with in other places."

Like defensive coordinator Brian Stewart and defensive line coach Todd Grantham, who worked under Capers in Houston, and Maxie, who played for Capers in Carolina. The Cowboys interviewed Maxie, a Dallas native, on Friday. He spent last year as Miami's assistant secondary coach. He would assist Dave Campo.

Maxie was a rookie safety with New Orleans in 1985 when Phillips was the Saints defensive coordinator.

It might have been a case of too many cooks in the kitchen with Capers here. It's basically Phillip's defense with Stewart acting as coordinator. As much as I like Capers, it just wasn't a good fit from the start.

Very disappointing. I think Capers could have helped the D turn the corner :banghead:

First I'd heard about Maxie. I like that hire. Maybe it's good to have have the old, dumpy, unathletic secondary coach assisted by the younger guy who played in the league for quite a while (like Bowles did). And he worked for a good DB coach in Miami.

For the conspiracy theorists, it looks like Capers could step right in as DC at some point in the future and have most of his assistants already in place, doesn't it?

It's funny you say that. Nobody really knows what he does, but he's gotta step it up...

Oh and theogt, I'm not heartbroken either.

I posted his Miami bio in the Daily Zone. Not a bad hire. Based on his bio, he'll be working primarily with the safeties.

Being the DC, I hold him responsible for the performance of the unit...

I was hoping that Capers would join the staff...

But I knew it was just a pipe dream when Stewart told him he wouldnt be comfortable.

Its too bad.....for some reason now......Im starting to dislike Stewart....we miss out on a very experienced coach because of Stewart was thinking of himself instead of the team.

I hope Stewart proves me wrong......

I figured that because it's taken so long, Capers wasn't particularly interested.

Lots of pressure on Wade, IMO, to get this team to the Super Bowl. Wade better be sure he's got the best staff he can possibly assemble . . . .

"Dom, what's your secret to getting people to want you as DC so much despite your incredibly mediocre record the past seven years?"

"It's the hair, Dan... The hair."

I would understand if it wasn't for the fact that Wade runs it on gameday. I just don't know what there is to judge as far as Stewart.

I will have to say that I am disappointed. For some reason I thought he would help our secondary improve.

I hope Stewart can prove me wrong and show he is the best choice between the two of them.

That's what concerns me about Stewart - that Wade actually runs the defense.

That said, some Head Coaches also call the offensive plays, not the OC, so maybe it's not a big deal.

I don't know.

But I really wonder if Stewart was Wade's top choice when he was hired last year by JJ? Guess we will never know. Wade couldn't get some of the staff he wanted last season off SD's roster.

So, was Stewart the consolation prize? Or does Wade think extremely highly of Stewart's talents? (Of course, if his is the case, why not let him call the defensive plays then?)

End of the day, it's Wade's butt on the line. As long as Wade is happy with his DC . . . . I guess I should be as well.

Of course it's not a big deal. It happens all the time.

We went through a big ordeal last year trying to get Stewart away from San Diego. I think it's a pretty safe assumption to think Stewart was his first choice.

I know we went through a big ordeal to get him, but for some reason I thought we were trying to get one of SD's other coaches for the job, but SD wouldn't release him. Not sure though . . . .

Anyway, proof is in the pudding as they say . . . . this defensive coaching staff looks pretty good vs. last year's. Let's see how it goes.

Agreed. Stewart has only been here 1 year and in that year we improved in almost every facet on defense with his starting NT out for the year and both his corners hurt the entire season while the team was leaning a new defense. What exactly did Stewart do to make so many enemies?

I don't think it's enemies, per se.

But when you hear these "rumors" that Capers and G Williams have interviewed for senior positions on the defensive side of the ball, it makes you wonder what Wade/JJ are thinking regarding Stewart.
