Disappointing...

Stewart needs to step it up next year...

You mean Wade. Wade is the DC, Stewart is but an assistant. Wade even said, he was running the defense when he took the job. The issue we have to worry about is Campo who will be the secondary coach. That is where we had lots of issues last season.

Let's check my report card on coaching replacements.

I wanted Mike Solari to replace Sparano as the OL Coach. We got Houck. I'm not unhappy with that hiring.

I wanted Dennis Thurman or Emmitt Thomas to come in and replace Todd Bowles and be the DB Coach. Thomas was denied by the Falcons who gave him a raise. Thurman was denied by the Ravens. We got Dave Campo whom I did not want, and Brett Maxie, who I kind of like what I am reading about him so far.

I wanted Dom Capers to replace Kacy Rodgers and the DL Coach. We got Todd Grantham. I'm not unhappy with that hiring either.

I wanted John Pagano to replace Paul Pasqualoni as the LB Coach and we got Kevin Herring. I'm not sure how I feel about that but he looks like a decent hire and his forte' is LBs.

I wanted Marco Rivera to be hired as an OL Assistant and there's no evidence he's even interested in coaching.

Yeah, I'd grade my plans as flushable.

I don't think it's enemies, per se.

But when you hear these "rumors" that Capers and G Williams have interviewed for senior positions on the defensive side of the ball, it makes you wonder what Wade/JJ are thinking regarding Stewart.
I think its more Jerry being overly paranoid and reverting back to being the old Jerry. We made major strides as a defense all with Jacque Reeves as our starting and nickle corner. I think Stew has a better feel for our players and we will be even better next year.

Very disappointing. I think Capers could have helped the D turn the corner :banghead:

If Spears can turn into something on the plus side, with the growth of Canty and Ratliff, plus Johnson still developing into a 3-4 player, the Cowboys should see a better pass rush.

Capers in a consultive role doesn't seem like a good fit for anybody.

The only real worry I have is Campo, but I think him just working with DBs is probably better for him. I think he is a pretty good specializing at DB coaching, but gets overwhelmed when you give him more responsibility.

Of course, I also believe he is extremely soft and requires someone with a strong arm to be above him to keep players in line. Wade is soft, Campo is a freakin plush teddy-bear. I don't like that.

To get Thurman and Houck would have been a big-time payday all by itself. As for defensive line and linebacker coaches, Wade will be a big influence because thats his speciality which is a plus no matter who is holding those coaching positions. The problem again, is he is to soft. Thats why I don't think he makes a good HC, but is a great DC.

Oh, I defintely expect to be a better team this coming season, both in offense and defense.

I think Wade/Stewart, but esp. Wade given his vast experience, will have a good idea of what our defensive players can and can't do well. Where our holes are, and where we need to improve (esp when it comes to our depth).

I'm not judging this team on its regular season record (and I'm assuming it's good enough to make the playoffs). Whether we're 16-0, or 13-3, on 11-5 is almost irrelevant. I'm judging it on how far we progress in the playoffs.

I don't have doubts about Campo's abilities. I just didn't want him back.

Would make much more sense to have Capers come here after Wade is gone. The main selling point last year for Wade was his great defenses. All this courting Capers and Gregg Williams was strange.

The SD coach that Wade really wanted was Pagano but the Chargers refused. I also think Wade wanted him again this time but suspect the Chargers again deneid us permission. When Charger GM was asked about Cowboy request to interview Pagano, he refused to discuss it.

I think Stewart got the DC job cause he was the only one the Chargers would let go cause Turner brought in his own guy for the secondary. And Wade wanted Stewart cause he was one coach that Wade just worked with and would know his 34 system. Also understood Wade to say he called the plays in mostly the first half but turned that responsibility over to Stewart in the 2nd half.

I don't think it was strange. Good football men are exactly that, good football men. We courted Emmitt Thomas for the same reason.

Its too bad.....for some reason now......Im starting to dislike Stewart....we miss out on a very experienced coach because of Stewart was thinking of himself instead of the team.

Why is Wade considered "soft"

Do great head coaches need to be "hard"

I dont get it......also....as a DC....you can be great but "soft"? but not as a HC you cant?

hmmmm.....

I think Wade just gets a bad label.......maybe its his press conferences...his laid back attitude.....I dont know.

Meh...I figured with it taking this long, and now that Spags stayed in New York for sure last week and the Capers thing didn't happen really quickly that it was highly unlikely that he was coming here.

I think the staff Dallas has assembled will be fine and we'll see what they can do.

That's what concerns me about Stewart - that Wade actually runs the defense.

That said, some Head Coaches also call the offensive plays, not the OC, so maybe it's not a big deal.

I don't know.

But I really wonder if Stewart was Wade's top choice when he was hired last year by JJ? Guess we will never know. Wade couldn't get some of the staff he wanted last season off SD's roster.

So, was Stewart the consolation prize? Or does Wade think extremely highly of Stewart's talents? (Of course, if his is the case, why not let him call the defensive plays then?)

End of the day, it's Wade's butt on the line. As long as Wade is happy with his DC . . . . I guess I should be as well.

You brought up some interesting points. Thanks.

I am curious why so many people dont like capers.

Who had more defensive talent in 2006, the cowboys or the dolpins? Raise your hand if you think the dolphins did?

They finished 4th in defense and 5th in points allowed. That is pretty good to me, and that was dom capers and I am sure some of nick saban.

I watched enough of him in Houston. If he came to Dallas, I would've been so-so about the move. He's not coming, and I'm still so-so him.

And BTW, Capers not coming to Dallas more than likely has everything to do with what the Dolphins have to pay him for the last year of his contract and what the 'boys were willing to pay. He can sit out this year and get paid a nice $2mil for doing nothing.

I'm curious as to why anyone would only look at total yards and total points allowed to rank a defense.

They were 29th in the league in Weighted DVOA. They were 27th against the run and 31st against the pass. And according to the Aikman Efficiency Ranking they were 31st in defense.

Those are both more accurate rankings than just total yards and points. In addition they were 29th in the league in terms of opponent passer rating and 32nd in the league in rushing yards per game. Of all official statistics, opponent's passer rating has the highest correlation with winning percentage.

Being the DC, I hold him responsible for the performance of the unit...

Then why arent you calling for Garrett then. The offense was clearly playing below the level of the defense at the end of the year.

Cause it's more conveniant to make it out to be all the defense and Stewarts fault.
