Not to say Capers is not a good coach. But this is Wade's defense and lose or win he will be a hero/goat.

I like the fact that Jerry is allowing Wade to bring in his on coaches. All the fuss early on was that Jerry was back to his old ways again. It seems just the opposite. Other than bringing back Garrett which was a know brainer he has allowed Wade the freedom to hire his own coache.

I believe Jerry wanted Capers here not Wade. Which Capers probably got the same message. I am sure Stewart didn't want him, but I am sure Wade felt the same way.

I believe with a year of season and the players understanding the scheme more. The defense will definetly be improved.

As every year the key will be getting pressure on the QB consistenly.

I watched enough of him in Houston. If he came to Dallas, I would've been so-so about the move. He's not coming, and I'm still so-so him.

So how do you feel about all his D assistants from Houston being in control of the Cowboys defense?

Stewart, Grantham, Herring. All were position coaches with the Texans.

i dont really follow the Texans how bad was their defense in their tenure? I know the QB and OL play was awful but i dont know much about the defense.

profootball reference to the rescue i guess.

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other about them. Stewart is an incomplete because he didn't call plays.

Grantham was fired from his DC job. And since I didn't really watch the Browns, so I don't know how good of a job he did there. But, I'm so-so about him.

Herring was only with Capers for a bit. I like his track record away from Capers, but he's still an unknown.

Basically, just gotta wait to see what they do here.

i hope wade is really running the D and stewart is kind of just helping out. as were my suspicions last year. i hope its even more profound this year. Nothing against stewart just when someone like capers comes along they have to jump on that. it wasnt an unreasonable hire . he wasnt a 4-3 expert coming in to try to help he is a 3-4 expert , is a proven coordinator. i dont know some may disagree but comes to me as the most disappointing news this offseason so far. and hopefully the only .

First I'd heard about Maxie. I like that hire. Maybe it's good to have have the old, dumpy, unathletic secondary coach assisted by the younger guy who played in the league for quite a while (like Bowles did). And he worked for a good DB coach in Miami.

For the conspiracy theorists, it looks like Capers could step right in as DC at some point in the future and have most of his assistants already in place, doesn't it?

you mean the thought of Campo carrying his lunchbox and punchclock alone everyday doesn't excite you? :D

As the Cowboys close in on hiring Brett Maxie as assistant secondary coach, they now know they will not have Dom Capers on Wade Phillips staff.

Capers told our Calvin Watkins he has decided against accepting a position with the Cowboys early Monday morning. Capers talked to the Cowboys two weeks ago about possibly coming in as a consultant.

"Wade's got a great staff," Capers said. "Some of the guys that Wade has I've worked with in other places."

Like defensive coordinator Brian Stewart and defensive line coach Todd Grantham, who worked under Capers in Houston, and Maxie, who played for Capers in Carolina. The Cowboys interviewed Maxie, a Dallas native, on Friday. He spent last year as Miami's assistant secondary coach. He would assist Dave Campo.

Maxie was a rookie safety with New Orleans in 1985 when Phillips was the Saints defensive coordinator.

THANKS STEWART:bang2:

I was hoping that Capers would join the staff...

But I knew it was just a pipe dream when Stewart told him he wouldnt be comfortable.

Its too bad.....for some reason now......Im starting to dislike Stewart....we miss out on a very experienced coach because of Stewart was thinking of himself instead of the team.

I hope Stewart proves me wrong......

how would you like to be something at your firm and then have a guy who has done your job before, generally considered to be better, brought in as your underling or a consultant? might as well just put a target on your back

Not a huge disappointment at all. We honestly didn't need Caper, Campo, Philips and the heir apparent himself Garret all on the same staff. Too many egos and head coaches in that situation.

Being the DC, I hold him responsible for the performance of the unit...

were you unsatisfied with how the defense played this year?

I don't know why people are blaming it on Stewart. Capers could've came here if he wanted to. He was just smart enough to realize that it would be a dysfunctional situation. And if we wanted him bad enough, then we could've canned Stewart.

it's funny how Jerry and BP have played a game of give and take staff members

BP takes Ireland, Sparano, and Gaines

we take Hudson, Maxie and talked to Capers about coming here

at least we know that they're trying to improve the secondary, which is good, sad though that Capers isnt' coming here, but I'll live

I would understand if it wasn't for the fact that Wade runs it on gameday. I just don't know what there is to judge as far as Stewart.

the secondary screwing up later in the season

So if you put that on Stewart or Wade or any of the coaches, when does it become the responsibility of the players? Is it the coaches fault if players or out of position or look like the keystone cops when tackling?

The secondary screwed up in one game. Actually it was just one person in one drive. Other than that the secondary played pretty well down the stretch.
