Capers takes off

The Cowboys did their best to ward off the local media looking for Dom Capers this afternoon. But as he headed for the parking lot with offensive line coach Hudson Houck and head coach Wade Phillips, the prospective linebackers coach couldn't avoid a confrontation with an army of cameras.

So as the coaches try to shoo themselves into the SUV, we could only get one question off -- How was the interview?

"Good," Capers responded. Dressed in a sport coat and dress shoes, Capers appeared cheerful as he left Valley Ranch. So we'll see what happens next.

Todd Grantham had options. But coming to Dallas, in his estimation, was the best one.

“The thing that impressed me is this is a first-class organization,” Grantham said today at Valley Ranch. “It’s a special place. I think they’ve got some good young players that can succeed, so I was excited about that.”

So excited, in fact, that he put the opportunity Dallas presented over several others. There were several position-coach openings that Grantham was in the running for, he even could have re-surfaced as a defensive coordinator with one NFL club.

But the timing of everything would’ve forced Grantham to wait, and decided instead to jump on the Cowboys opportunity. Grantham worked with defensive coordinator Brian Stewart in Houston and also with Dom Capers, the then-Texans head coach who interviewed today for the linebackers coach opening.

“I worked with Stew in Houston – We had a good relationship, I respect him, and he did a good job here last year,” Grantham said. “And just being around Wade, I was very comfortable, felt like it was a good situation that I wanted to be a part of.”

And in moving to that situation, Grantham isn’t he holds no ill will to the Cleveland organization, which fired him after the season.

“We were able to take an organization and win 10 games, which hadn’t been done in something like 20 years,” Grantham. “I wish those guys the best. We were able to get it turned in the right direction. Winning 10 games was a pretty good achievement and we played pretty good defense the last eight games of the year and I was proud of that too.”

Next up will be another adjustment to a new type of 3-4.

At both Michigan State under Nick Saban and with the Browns under Romeo Crennel, Gratham helped run a gap-control style of the defense. With the Texans and Capers, it was based more of blitzing and pressure. And Wade’s style is a bit different than either one, which is fine with his new defensive line coach.

“I think there’s some similarities, but each situation is different,” Grantham said. “What you do is evaluate your personnel when you get there and see what they can do as players and let the players do the things they do the best.”

I think Dom gets the job. And I think this is another quality staff. I like the Grantham addition.

I think so, too. Clarence Hill was on Irvin's show on 103.3 about 20 minutes ago, and he was strongly hinting that the job was Capers'. But then they got to arguing about other things and they never asked him any more about it. (Thanks, Kevin Kiley.)

FWIW, Ellis just had a short press conference about making the Pro Bowl, and said he shook Capers' hand out in the hallway just a little while ago.

I'm all in favour of a great coaching staff but at the end of the day, the players have to make the plays. All the coaching and play calling in the world won't stop a receiver like Crayton from slowing down at the ten yard line on a fly pattern that would have won us a playoff game.

Capers: "Hello Greg, how are you?"

Ellis: "Uh. How should I be? If they hire you, will you appreciate me? I'm not sure what my role here is. Would you tell me if they hire you? I just made the Pro Bowl, but I'm worried someone is trying to trick me."

Good point, but maybe another coach rides Craytons butt so much every day in practice throughout the season about quitting on routes that he gets in the habit of NEVER quitting on a route.

Just saying.

Ellis: Do you really want to know how I am? Can I have $50 so I know you really mean it?

I somewhat agree, and somewhat disagree. A good coach can help a player make good playing a matter of routine. They can also find someone to replace as player who just seems to play small in big games. You can't tell me that the ability of guys like Reid, Gibbs and Holmgren to take guys out of the stands or off the streets and have them playing like All-Pros in a matter of days or a week has nothing to do w/ what kind of coaches they are. Would be pats be 18-0 w/o Belichick???...

I would like to see Capers come to Dallas, I'm more interested in him coming here than Campo. I hope we hear something soon about hiring Capers instead of him just being here to interview.

I like our chances. I think the other open opportunities out there for him suck. I didn't think he'd take a lesser job, but maybe he will. He knows the 3-4. That is the huge upside of this.

What's funny, Hos is all the blog entries I read about Wade being the most popular guy at the Senior Bowl. Said it was amazing how many people knew his phone number.

With the kind of team, Dallas, it shouldn't be surprising people are trying to get on that wagon; no matter the position.

The reports have been positive for sure. I like that he took his entire coaching staff to the Senior Bowl workouts. That says to the whole group that he values their input. I've never heard of a coach doing that before.
