Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
The Cowboys didn't think they needed another cornerback entering the second day of last year's draft. They had addressed that need by trading for Pacman Jones and picking Mike Jenkins in the first round.
Dallas traded up for Orlando Scandrick in the fifth round because he was by far the best value on their board. Good thing they did.
If the season started now, Scandrick would probably start opposite Terence Newman. The competition between Scandrick and Jenkins will be an intriguing training camp storyline. Give Scandrick the edge based on his superior rookie season.
After sentencing Anthony Henry to a season in Detroit in exchange for Jon Kitna, the Cowboys have a need at cornerback again. (I'll give Jerry Jones the benefit of the doubt and assume that the Cowboys planned to cut Henry if they didn't deal him to Detroit.)
It's not as big a concern as last year, when upgrading the position was the top off-season priority. But the Cowboys at least need to find somebody to compete with unproven third-year player Alan Ball for the fourth corner spot, whether it's a second-day draft pick or low-priced free agent. Given Terence Newman's recent injury history, odds are the Cowboys' fourth corner will get significant playing time.
