Jones: Cowboys not looking for a Wide Receiver 1/23/2010 2:19:33 PM

Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News reports what are the Cowboys biggest draft needs? At the top of the list is offensive line. And even if the Cowboys won last week, it would still be offensive line. It's always offensive line.

Then kicker and safety.

And you would think wide receiver, too, right? Not to Jerry Jones. "We've got some receivers, enough where if I left the draft without a receiver, I'd sleep like a baby," the owner and general manager said Thursday.

We know about his crush on Kevin Ogletree. You saw Miles Austin explode in 2009. You know Roy Williams, despite the low production, will be back. And Patrick Crayton is dependable and has scored 16 touchdowns the last three seasons. Sam Hurd has had moments too.

But Jones also mentioned practice squadders Jesse Holley, who won an invite to camp from Michael Irvin's reality show, and Manny Johnson, a seventh round pick, as players that could push the guys next year.

Maybe not 1st round but if you could snag a quality WR who can PR/KR in the 2nd or third, I wouldn't mind seeing it happen.

If Ogletree has a solid offseason and steps up next year, then I think we are fine at WR.

I agree 100% OL is the biggest concern at this point. Flozell was decent this year but how much longer we can depend on him? This was about the time Walter Jones started to slow down. Is Doug Free a LT or a RT? I think it depends on how high we draft an OL.

I would LOVE to draft Mike Iupati because he instantly competes with Kosier and can play tackle as well. I honestly think Colombo's days in Dallas are over. I think he's a surprise cut this year. We need to upgrade at LG, RT and even LT.

If Mardy Gilyard falls into the second round, I'm sure they would consider it, he is a great ST guy. Also if Denver gives away Marshall, I bet Jerry would consider that too.

I can see not needing a wide receiver for three reasons.

1. With Roy's contract he will have another year to prove himself.

2. Upgrade the o-line and it will make the WR's look better. Them, Romo, runningbacks, and even Garrett. They will basically make every single player on offense look better.

3. Ogletree has showed promise. I'm not saying he should start next year, but I do expect him to be a productive player for us in the near future.

Morgan Burnett in the 2nd round = championship!
If we got him in the 2nd and Iupati in the 1st that would be a great draft.

i'm glad manny johnson is still around and possible to come up if needed. not sure about holley, but irvin should know if the kid can play.

If Iupati is as great as he sounds, then I'd be thrilled! OL 1st!

The media should quit trying to interpret what Jones says, he did not say they weren't looking for WRs.

I expect his stock to shoot up though, so I doubt he will fall to us.

I'm glad a quality P/K is in our future.
Unlike Hos,(and I know he's going to hate to hear it) I believe a good P/K alone will win us at least 2-3 games per year.

Jerruh all but said it. And would good reason. we have our #1 in Miles. Jeruh wants Roy to have another shot so that takes care of #2. Crayton is a very good #3. Hurd is a solid backup. Ogletree showed a lot of promise. And the other guys will get a good look in camp. We all know Jerruh is very averse to using high picks on WRs. Right now he thinks we are fine at WR and outside of taking a shot at someone in the late rds I do not see us going after any.

And above all else Jerruh knows it takes time for just about every WR to produce and he wants to be at home in the SB NEXT YEAR.

I think it's a pretty fair interpretation of his quote. And he's right. Receiver should be the last thing on our shopping list.

No QB, TE, OLB, and possibly RB should be the last things on the list.

I agree with this. I believe Hurd is a free agent though and will likely be gone. So that would move Ogletree to #4, and then the rest of the crap/maybe a late round pick would battle it out for #5.

This isn't to say I wouldn't like to see us draft one - I would, especially if the player could double as a returner... but I can see from Jerry's POV where WR isn't a need.

This is the philosophy that leads to Jerry throwing some team a boat load of draft picks for a WR once every 10 years or so.

Love Jerry but I'll just never understand him when it comes to some things.

Disagree about tight end. I think we should draft at least one late every year. As far as I'm concerned Phillips could take Cricket's spot, and that would open up another TE roster spot.

I think when Jerry talks about the draft everything that is said should be taken with a grain of salt.He could say that no WR will be considered today and then about this time next week he will say no OL will be taken. There will be alot of posturing from now until draft weekend from Jerry.
