On the way to the parking lot after his press conference, Wade Phillips mentioned that the Cowboys are considering adding a receiver to the roster.

They were down to five receivers during yesterday's practice, and that group included a seventh-round pick and two undrafted rookies. They could use a pair of fresh legs out there.

Just don't get your hopes up that they'll give Matt Jones a chance.

Jerry Jones has consistently said that the Cowboys aren't interested in his fellow Razorback. Jerry reportedly reiterated that in the wee hours of Sunday morning, when he was in an, ahem, giddy state and pondered whether bringing back Pacman Jones would be a good idea.

If any NFL team has shown interest in the former first-round pick, who was released by Jacksonville after drug-related legal issues, it's managed to keep it out of the media. But Jerry wouldn't get ripped here if he gave the ex-Jaguar a shot, assuming it's a no-risk deal for the Cowboys.

The Valley Ranch line of thinking is that adding Matt Jones to the mix might impede the progress of Miles Austin and Sam Hurd. However, it's hard for Austin and Hurd to make much progress if they're not dressed out due to injuries, as has been the case during the last several days of OTAs. And, given their recent injury, that has to be a concern for the Cowboys.

Plus, it's not like either has proven himself as a reliable NFL receiver. Austin's potential is especially intriguing because of his size and speed -- I'm on record predicting he'll challenge Patrick Crayton for the starting job -- but he's still a guy with 18 career catches. The 6-6, 218-pound Jones is bigger and at least as fast as Austin

Austin and Hurd's combined career stats: 42 catches for 743 yards and four TDs.

Jones' stats in 12 games last season: 65 catches for 761 yards and two TDs.

I'm not saying the Cowboys should sign Jones and immediately put him above Austin or Hurd on the depth chart. But, if Jones is keeping his nose clean, how would it harm the Cowboys to let him compete for a roster spot?

I'm actually not opposed to this.

It is Stanback who this would put on notice.

I have no problem signing Matt Jones as long as it is a zero tolerance type of thing. You want to play football for the Dallas Cowboys, you stay out of trouble and keep your nose clean.. Cocaine will still be there when you retire.

If he cut out the b.s. , I think he could be a pretty good player for us.

Stanback should just hit the road regardless. That guy is ALWAYS hurting something! If you shake hands with him to hard his freaking shoulder will pop out...again!

Hell, I would take one of those recievers that Irvin is working with over plastic man.

Ahhh....and therein lies the question....can he?

I agree w/ you. Jones has talent and I am all for getting us talent if they can produce and STAY OUT OF TROUBLE.

Stanback is constantly hurt. At least w/ Matt Jones we are getting someone who can run and catch the ball.

Now the media wants us to go after this troublemaker...why, so they can report the news when he screws up and then write article after article blaming Jerry Jones.
I don't know about anyone else but I wouldn't make the local media's job any easier for them. Controversy is slow now...hmmmn...maybe they should write and report about football issues that happen on the field....you know sports related info.
What a concept that would be.

I would take all of the emboldened players before I took Matt Jones. I can't believe people would be willing to bring in a guy who arguably had a worse criminal scandal than Pacman or Plaxico.

Oh, but wait, he's not "thuggish" so he gets a pass from Roger "Preferential Treatment" Gooddell.

I kind of like the idea of adding Amani Toomer. I have always respected him. Booker might be the 2nd name on that list for me.
