DeMarcus Ware, who had an NFL-high 20 sacks, was disappointed he was not named the AP's Defensive Player of the Year, but he now has a goal for 2009.

"I've got something to shoot for, to become the No. 1 player," Ware said. "There will be a lot of guys shooting for it but it just gives me something to shoot for, like I didn't get the sack record and that's something to shoot for."

Ware acknowledged that the Cowboys' playoff absence probably hurt his case. Pittsburgh's James Harrison won the award, finishing with nine more votes than Ware.

Ware finished 2.5 sacks short of Michael Strahan's league record (22.5) for sacks in a season and by his count he missed at least six in 2008.

"A legit six," he said, "where maybe I would jump on the guy's back and try and knocj the ball out instead of tackling him. I missed [Washington's Jason] Campbell twice, [Philadelphia's Donovan] McNabb twice, [Pittsburgh's Ben] Roethlisberger once and the San Francisco quarterback [Shaun Hill) when he had a screen pass and I backed off.

"I remember, believe me. I remember every single one of them."

I love Ware.

I also love that he didn't even remember the name of the "San Francisco quarterback" although he remembered the others.

Ware is one guy where I don't worry about when he sees his payday, he'll bring it every game.

He is my favorite player on this team and he is quickly climbing the ranks on my all time list. He is already top 10 and can climb even more. I love this kid.

Let's be honest. Would YOU even have remembered the San Fran QB's name had it not been provided in parenthesis above? :laugh2:

he will break the record next year. I'll be shocked if he doesn't.

You wait and see...after Jones makes him the richest defensive player in the league history (and very deservedly so) the first quarter of a game that goes by where he doesnt get a sack, there will be some clown/s claiming he was a waste of money, didnt deserve it, Jones was stupid etc etc

It WILL happen.

For a while I was a little disappointed that we skipped on Merriman, but it turns out he was definitely the right choice. He'll break the record this year or beyond definitely.

Moments after drafting him, when Bill Parcells stated in the Cowboys locckeroom that Demarcus Ware reminded him of Lawrence Taylor, I thought he was just blowing smoke.

I never imagined the guy would be this good this fast.

It's going to be real interesting to see how many sacks he ends up with when his career is over with.

Like death and taxes.

Begs an interesting question:

Which is more likely next season: Ware sets the single-season sack record or the Cowboys win a playoff game.

I also love Ware but he will have a hard time beating out my all time favorite Cowboy Randy White but if he manages to get a SuperBowl MVP he may just take that spot but it will be hard for him to get that spot :D. my second favorite is Emmitt but that is me man so many great players it is crazy

I remembered, but that was only because it was my one and only game at Texas Stadium.

I like him but as favourite players go, he's not yet ready to join the Randy White-Issaic Holt-Michael Irvin pantheon.

Ware is my favorite Cowboy, but I refuse to buy his jersey.

I got an Emmitt jersey as a gift right before he left the team.

Then I got a RW jersey right before his game went down the tubes.

This year, I ordered a Romo jersey after our win against the Packers. Romo was injured shortly after, and became erratic the rest of the year.

I jinx these guys.

Impossible. We have the worst GM in NFL History.

You buy a Ware jersey and I'll tell a bored queen how to find you.

:wink2:

Great player. Can you imagine if Joey Porter hit 20 sacks and didn't win the award?

But Parcells wanted to pick Spears at that spot??
