Devil's advocate on trading up for D-Mac

While I don't think trading up for Darren McFadden is a good idea for the Cowboys, it's not too tough to make a case for such a deal.

Forget about Miami's reported request for Marion "The Barbarian" Barber to be part of the package. The Cowboys might be able to land McFadden by moving up to No. 4. A reasonable offer to the Raiders would be this year's two first-rounders and next year's No. 1.

Too much? Not if you look at Jerry's history with picks in the latter half of the first round.

Would you give up Bobby Carpenter, Marcus Spears and Anthony Spencer for a gamebreaking running back? Those are the Cowboys' last three picks in the late teens-twenties range. We're talking about a good special teamer, a J.A.G. DE and a promising OLB prospect.

The other post-Jimmy era late first-rounders are DE Ebenezer Ekuban, TE David LaFleur and DE Shante Carver. Yuck.

Combine Jerry's lust for his fellow Hog with his lack of confidence in his ability draft a good player in the twenties, and you can at least understand his logic in trying to trade up for McFadden.

Report: Jones still covets D-Mac

10:49 AM Sun, Jan 27, 2008

For the second time in as many days, ESPN's Chris Mortensen has said that Cowboys owner/GM is hot after Arkansas RB Darren McFadden.

He said it on ESPN Radio's GameDay yesterday, and again on NFL Countdown moments ago. And apparently he has a prospective trading partner in the Dolphins, who have former Valley Ranchers Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland in charge.

Most people have McFadden going in the top five. Timmy Tabloid already addressed what it would take to get to No. 1, which I'd agree is far too steep a price to pay. In fact, I really wouldn't go after McFadden, period.

But if you want to know, the draft value chart employed by most teams shows that the assigned point total the two picks (22 and 28) the Cowboys have add to 1,440. That total, according to the chart, lands between the seventh (1,500) and eighth (1,400) overall picks. The Patriots, picking seventh overall, could be a viable trading partner, given that they traditionally don't like paying the up-front money that Top 10 picks command and consider late first-rounders of higher value.

Still, that probably won't get you McFadden. To get in to the top five, it'll likely take both picks and, at least, another mid-round selection. Or, as Mort reported, Marion Barber could be thrown in the pot.

All in all, I say don't do it. I say use both those picks, and fill the few holes that are left in a well-built roster. Get a corner, get a receiver. Just don't lust after McFadden.

Maybe he'll be a great player. I don't think that's any sure thing at all. And given the circumstances, and what you'd be giving up, I think there's little chance he'd be a great value.

#4 is 1800.

#22 is 780
#28 is 660

1440 is a lot closer to 1800 than 3000 (captain obvious here!) but NO WAY IN HELL do i give up next years #1 also. 3 1s for mcfadden? why on EARTH would we do that, eat the salary and risk it when this is a DEEP draft for rbs?

Please don't do it!

The Cowboys have a team in place that is ALMOST there! Don't go the Midget route and start giving away draft picks away for a player that might not be a good NFL player...it's just to big of a risk for a RB...a QB, maybe? But not a RB!

moving up to #1 is too expensive. #4 is doable with oakland for just our 2 1s and maybe spears or carpenter or something. but this is a deep draft for rbs so i don't see the need to get tunnell vision on one player.

let's say it costs us both 1s and spears or carpenter. that's 3 1s we're giving up on more or less for mcfadden.

so mcfadden would cost us overall
spears/carpenter, + desean jackson and talib, for example. then we pick up rice in the 2nd and we've got our rb.

other players could be cason, sweed (although i don't want sweed), chris johnson, malcom kelly, felix jones, doucet...

take any combination of these that is possible and it's all gone. just for mcfadden.

doesn't make sense to me.

What if Jerry has some type of plan where he wants to fill our holes with veterans?

That way he is able to get McFadden.

Im not saying its the route i'd take but who knows.

I have a question...

Barber may be an RFA-however, you CAN still trade him without signing him? I'm confused.

he'd need to be signed. or we can tender a high offer and if a team signs him, we get their 1st and 3rd round picks.

Well-then that makes Mort an idiot.

IF we sign him and THEN trade him, then we'll nonetheless get a salary cap HIT from the signing bonus we gave him-even Jerry isn't that stupid.

I guess we can put all these "DMac to Dallas" threads RIP.:)

Barber is not going anywhere unless someone offers us a blockbuster / Herschel Walker type deal and even then he still may not go.

If we sign Barber long term it doesn't make sense to trade up high and have another huge $ RB on the roster. Especially one that's not a guaranteed HOF player.

I'm not buying that. Is there anyone in the league more confident than Jerry with *any* decision?

There is no way on God's green earth I would give up 3 #1's for McFadden even if all three picks were in the 25-32 range.
