It is looooonnnnnnngggggg overdue that Ed Sabol should be in the Hall. Are they waiting for him to die? Ask any long time fan especially one who goes back to the 70's and they will tell you NFL Films was a huge part in getting them to be such big fans. No other sport had anything close. It was as integral to the advancement of the game as the merger and the Super Bowl, ok not quite as much as the SB but its up there.

I remember back in the late 70's or early 80's I got five LP's of NFL films music. My friends used to go ape poop when they found out. I had to make so many cassettes for friends and friends of friends.

ELECT ED SABOL (then Steve like 10 years from now)!!!

Great point! I didn't even read down that far in the initial post. As a contributor, he has had a great impact on the popularity of the game.

IMO, these players deserve to be in the hall:

Charles Haley
Ed "Too Tall" Jones
Emmitt Smith
Danny White
Darren Woodson

As do these two men:

Gil Brandt
Jimmy Johnson

Anytime I hear the words "Hall-of-Fame" I get frustrated because I cannot believe that "Too Tall" isn't already a member of the hall.

Agree with all of them except for Danny and Too Tall... if there was a Hall of Very Good, they'd make it, but I think they fall just short of HOF-worthy...

That's not to say I don't remember both of them with great fondness, but IMO they fall just short of the standard... but Emmitt, Woody, Haley, Gil and JJ, absolutely...

No way more than 2 of them will make it this year, though...

What interests me most between now and Emmitt Smith's enshrinement speech next year will be finding out just how many media representatives, current/ex-players and/or fans will either imply or outright state that he does not deserve first-ballot induction. Insane? Sure, without a doubt, but he's an ex-Cowboy so it will happen. Bank on it.

I seriously doubt there will be anyone who thinks Emmitt's not a first-ballot inductee. I here what you are saying though. If anyone steps up to the plate in that regard, they need help - the same kinda help Juke needs - LOT's of it.

It will be very interesting to see if Woodson makes the final 15. (He should, of course).

The other thing is, Too Tall keeps making this preliminary list, and Harvey Martin doesn't.

Great points.

Woodson is the one I'm watching. He might have an outside chance (maybe Jerry will decide to put him in the Ring of Honor sometime before he dies).

And no Drew Pearson.

Good point. Both belong in the Hall of Fame as special contributors.

NFL Films set the standard. Major League Baseball, for all it's nostalgia and history, has nothing compared to NFL Films.

 You're being very naive if you believe that Emmitt Smith will receive universal acceptance as a Hall of Famer.

ANYONE that doesn't think Emmitt Smith, the All Time Rushing Leader, is a first ballot HOFer is either braindead or just a complete Cowboy hater. I don't see how ANY member of the media can come out against Emmitt as a first ballot HOFer without looking like an absolute idiot.

I can't people are seriously doubting whether Emmitt will be a 1st ballot HOF. They are already in the process of making his and Jerry's bust as we speak.
