DMN Blog: Gerald Sensabaugh delivers message to Brett Favre

You are correct, sir. I applaud you for insisting that a well structured English sentence, a simple declaratory sentence be said with attention to grammar rules. I have the same argument almost daily with a friend of mine who employs improper English. I think it is an embarassment. But you and I may be in the distinct minority in our "come as you are" society.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not completely alone in my beliefs...Before you and Draegerman replied I was starting to believe I was lost in the Twilight Zone or something! I didn't realize so many people were actually AGAINST the correct use of language, especially concerning high-profile figures while speaking in a public capacity.

Gerald seems a tad overconfident. Hopefully he'll do his job well on Sunday.

What I find funny, is that it's always the non-stars on our team that seem to stir it up. A really confident team shouldn't have to say anything. The atmosphere is starting to feel more like 2007 and less like 2009 this week.

You would not be the only ones in this minority. Now let's continue forward and turn it into a majority! ;)

From a Mosley article

By the way WoodysGirl,

My apologies causing all of this...I NEVER intended this to happen with your thread! Thanks for posting the info about Sensabaugh and Favre.

:laugh2:

What a threadpost.

I might can think we need more like it, help's take the edges off: even if all the English defenders think their better than the rest of all of us.

Why not? Good Lord...these are professional athletes who have (mostly) either graduated with a bachelors degree, or at least spent a few years in college. You would think Sensabaugh "might could" put together a sentence without blatant abuses to the English language.

I'm a HUGE fan of Sensabaugh and I was one of his biggest proponents when I heard he was signed as a free agent. I originally pointed out the grammar mistake because it was funny, but if I'm actually being challenged as to why I pointed it out, then that's not saying much for our expectations of how people should speak, is it? Regardless of whether or not this is English class...I'm simply saying, it's bad form. Are you actually going to argue that?

First off I wouldn't correct others English gaffes if you're going to commit them.

It's "Those are" not "these are". It's just either not have either. It's he was signed. It's actually your expectations not our. It's not "it's bad form". Use "It's bad form.".

Please...you may want to check that yourself. There is nothing wrong with what I stated. Sure, in a doctoral level paper it is preferable to omit redundancy by leaving out "I'm just saying", but it certainly doesn't contradict any rules of grammar.

Anyway, if you don't have any value to add to the discussion then why post? This was never intended to be a nit-picking session on the members of this forum. I simply pointed out a gross error in English made by one of our players when speaking to the media. Don't make it to be more than it is...

Where is this even implied? I would never post or even think such a thing.

Heh...I have to admit it, you got me. You cleverly used an emoticon that was better than mine.

Congratulations!

That wasn't necessarily meant to be against you...but whatever.

I didn't think you were solely directing it at me but the idea that because people don't require others to speak in a Standard English dialect ALL the time somehow means that they are AGAINST the 'correct' (your word) use of a language is a bit asinine.

Think about it.

Holy Cow! As much as I hate to reply to the same post twice, I must ask if that's the lovely Thandie Newton in your avatar?

If so, then you clearly have more clout with me. ;)
