Isaiah Stanback finished training camp strong after missing 10 practices to nurse a sore hamstring.

Stanback made several catches in traffic during the latter half of camp. He also displayed his big-play ability by separating from Terence Newman for a long touchdown on a post route.

That gives Stanback a decent chance to keep undrafted free agent Kevin Ogletree, who was consistently solid throughout camp, from claiming the final receiver spot on the roster.

"He's picked up his pace a little bit more," WR coach Ray Sherman said of Stanback. "He's starting to play with a little more confidence. He missed some time because he was coming back from an injury, so it took him some time to come back. But he's starting to play at a faster speed, which we want him to do, and we want him to carry that from practice to the game. Hopefully, he'll do that in the ballgame, and I'll be happy with him."

Since his senior year in college, Stanback has had four surgeries (foot, shoulder twice, knee). He's also missed training camp time due to shin splints as a rookie and the hamstring this year. His medical problems have stunted the former college quarterback's development as a receiver.

However, Sherman pointed out that Stanback has had plenty of time to learn the system. As a third-year player, it's time to shed the project label and start producing.

That started to happen for Stanback in the Alamodome. It needs to continue the next two weeks in JerryWorld for his job to be safe.

I hope the best for him as well as Olgtree and hope the best man wins. Same goes for all other position battle out there. If Standback has put these injuries behind him and show himself to be the ball player the Cowboys envisioned then great.

I have mixed feelings about Stanback, he shows some signs of being a guy who can come in and contribute to the team but he is just so incosisntent. Throw in the fact that he is always injured and you cant help but think maybe its time to give someone else a shot.

I still fear for his long term health.

Making it thru a 16 game schedule unhurt seems like a pipe dream to me.

Wr is supposed to be a skill position. Our Wr depth consist of Undrafted free agents , QB to WR Projects and 7th rounders.. Even New England, Pittsburg and Indy spend high draft picks on WR's..

I kind of feel the same way, but a lot of people said the same about Jimmy Smith back in the day as well.

There are plenty of Hall of Fame players who weren't drafted "high", so I can't go with that argument, sorry....

Its a different time..20 to 30 years ago u could go under the radar in college.. Not any more. There are too many scouts scouring small schools. Of course there are exceptions like M. Colston..

I just want to get rid of Stanback.

The injuries are too much. Even when healthy, he has never shown me anything. I keep hearing about what he is like when he gets the ball in his hands, but even that I find unimpressive. His kick return ability is pathetic.

Why would a STUD, IMPACT player like stanback have to do anything in the preseason. If we release him he might go to another team and be an all-pro. We need to wait another 2 years before we can give a proper evaluation on stanback. Jerry don't do it, please.

Kick return skill is different then RAC skill. Not saying he is good at either, but it is different.

Sorry man the production doesnt warrant that. I dont care what kind of project or developemental player you are you still have to show some kind of production to warrant keeping you on the team and by production I mean something at the WR spot not just returner cause Ogletree looked better returning during the Oakland game. Its just like with Miles Austin he was a developement player but he's had some sort of production in a live game that shows that there is indeed potential to keep going with the developement. Stanback just hasnt done it and I feel bad for him cause I agree with his athletic abilities he is a stud but impact player I think not cause it just hasnt been done in a game yet. Ogletree is the better younger WR who still has a ton of potential lets churn that roster spot please

Why not keep 6 wide receivers?

Cause they are keeping 2 kickers and 3 QBs. No room for multiple guys to do nothing.

I don't agree about the Jimmy Smith/Stanback corrolation. JS had two injuries, one of them non-football related: A broken leg, then an appendectomy. On the other hand, Stanback has had a slew of different football-related injuries. Jimmy Smith was basically healthy football-wise, Stanback can't stay healthy football-wise.

Jerry's flip flops drive me crazy:

a) Condones and even trades for bad guys (Haley, E. Williams, Irvin, etc. etc.)
b) Gets rid of the bad guys on the team after the "White House." Passes on Randy Moss.
c) Then he sees Randy Moss' success while the Cowboys go through a bad phase.
d) So he gets more "trouble" on the team again if he sees talent: Owens, Pac, Tank.
e) Gets rid of the bad guys on the team again.

Coaches: From disciplinarians to easy-going guys, back and forth.

Jerry is determined not to let go of Stanback. He should let this one go. .... Guys in final cutdowns that have been let go while Stanback has kept his roster spot have have included Jerheme Urban, Matt Moore, Evan Oglesby ... all of them functional contributors on excellent teams.

Yeah he wasn't doing much on those KRs in Oakland. Running like he was stuck in mud.

That seems like an irrational reaction due to frustration more than anything else.
