Isaiah Stanback finished training camp strong after missing 10 practices to nurse a sore hamstring.
Stanback made several catches in traffic during the latter half of camp. He also displayed his big-play ability by separating from Terence Newman for a long touchdown on a post route.
That gives Stanback a decent chance to keep undrafted free agent Kevin Ogletree, who was consistently solid throughout camp, from claiming the final receiver spot on the roster.
"He's picked up his pace a little bit more," WR coach Ray Sherman said of Stanback. "He's starting to play with a little more confidence. He missed some time because he was coming back from an injury, so it took him some time to come back. But he's starting to play at a faster speed, which we want him to do, and we want him to carry that from practice to the game. Hopefully, he'll do that in the ballgame, and I'll be happy with him."
Since his senior year in college, Stanback has had four surgeries (foot, shoulder twice, knee). He's also missed training camp time due to shin splints as a rookie and the hamstring this year. His medical problems have stunted the former college quarterback's development as a receiver.
However, Sherman pointed out that Stanback has had plenty of time to learn the system. As a third-year player, it's time to shed the project label and start producing.
That started to happen for Stanback in the Alamodome. It needs to continue the next two weeks in JerryWorld for his job to be safe.
