DMN Blog: Jason Witten will not hold Martellus Bennett's hand

I am curious about why everyone is saying Bennett is cocky?

He got drafted in the second round, logic would dictate that makes him one of the best college players in the game. Why do people twist that into him being cocky, its a fact, and not even a disputable one.

cause many fans need:
1. hero
2. scapegoat
3. class clown
4. lockerroom inspiration
5. outlet valve for xyz reason
6. reason this teams sucks and must go now
7. rudy

and when one doesn't present themself, they take the closest one and make it that way.

Bennett just doesn't have the right attitude.

I'm surprised he has gotten as far in life as he has.

:lmao2:

I'll agree he seems like a turd at times but you've never met the guy.

HBO didn't "create" a perception of the kid. When the coach is whispering to you to tuck your shirt in and you spend 5 minutes arguing that it's not comfortable, that's all you. When you roll your eyes after a coach tries to get you pumped up, looking right at the camera like you're trying to clown him, that's all you. When you're asked to tuck the ball in or put your helmet on, and you act like it's the hardest request anyone has ever made of you in your life, that's all you.

I don't think I've ever seen a rookie as impressive in blocking the last two games.
I agree. It usually takes a rookie time to pick up how to block NFL defenders. He's been excellent at it.

He's gotten this far on sheer God-given talent. You can see the skill potential and some impressive results already. His attitude is horrible, though.

yep. maybe witten knows bennett has had things easy for too long and is forcing him to grow up. witten right now could be the best friend he has.
I agree, Witten is taking the right approach. Just think what he could be if Bennett was to take the attitude that I'm going to work just as hard and be just as coachable as Witten. He has the size and skill potential to be one of the best.

he does. yes he has a "tude" but so did irvin and many other successful players. bennett is new and so far the world has seemed easy to him. i'm amazed people will give time for a player to be coached on the game but not in the head as well.

witten being this hard on him is a GOOD THING. peer pressure can succeed where 5 years of coaching may not. the kids not played a down yet and already the IGS has him sucking.

i'd hate to go watch a movie with these people.

"is it over yet?"
"is it over yet?"
"is it over yet, this sucks"!?

...has never given me any reason as a Cowboys fan to doubt his abilities or his opinion.

From his rookie campaign when he played with a wired jaw to his ascension as one of the premier tight ends of the game I would trust his words more than any other expert on Martellus Bennett.

I wouldn't kick Bennett out the door, but I wouldn't be kissing the ground he walks on either.

Witten is asking the kid to figure out if he can get on board before he goes and helps him out.

I'll take that lead and wait before I throw my apples in Bennett's cart.

Hmmm...I am kind of torn on Witten's response. Granted, Bennett has an attitude and comes off as a lazy punk, but isn't asking for help a good thing? It's the know-it-alls who think they've got the game down who you want to throw off a roof. But when someone is asking for help and basically saying "I want to learn" why would an you turn your back on him? Like him or not, he is your teammate.

We've all seen the Hard Knocks segments where Owens is coaching the WR rookies and helping them to step up their game. Isn't that what elders are supposed to do?

I took it the other way. You expect more from these players. When they get told the same thing over and over. You tend to get short with them.

Getting Bennett looks more and more like a major mistake. Take away his athlethism and all you are left with is a big over-grown baby.

Getting rid of Fasano was a mistake.

I would bet the Witten has helped him time and time again...it's probably getting to the point that it's becoming a habit of always asking, "What do I do on this play?", or, "What route do I run this time, who do I block?"

That kind of stuff is most likely what he needs to figure out on his own without always asking over and over and over again.

That's what it sounds like to me. Once he learns what he supposed to do, then Witten can step in and teach him the finer points of football at the NFL level.

But, you cannot baby sit all the time...and the time comes when the tough love comes into play, otherwise the guy will always lean on you and never take the next step.

That is how I saw it, too. And Witten's response and attitude are spot on. He is more than willing to help Bennett. Bennett just has to get the process started first.

We got him because right now he is better then Fasano will ever be.

Fallacy.

Does he have a higher ceiling? Sure.

As a player today, better than Fasano? No.

What has fasano shown you to prove otherwise?

Bennett is already a better blocker, surely you can't argue that?

I dunno. Kid is already crushing folks on blocks and certainly looks a threat in the passing game... Imagine when he does put it all together.

He really does look good blocking and in the receiving game. I have been thrilled with his blocking though.

yea, and we have so much info to base this on.

can we let the kid grow up a little and maybe play 1 NFL game before we send him swimming with the fishes?

i swear to god some people go apecaca if every bit of news isn't rosey or positive.

I concede you guys are right. But what do you do when you are stuck with a knucklehead player who isn't going anywhere anytime soon and that player has enough raw talent that, if nurtured, can help your team possibly win a Super Bowl? Do you leave him to the coaches to deal with? Or do you bite the bullet, grit your teeth, and pitch in when you can? However, I get that everyone has their limit. And raw talent or not, Super Bowl or not, Bennett is wearing out his welcome with many of the players.

I fear he might be one of those talented players who has the world on a string but ends up blowing it all because he cannot make the transition from immature kid to professional adult. Gawd, how hard can it be to just grow up?!

Have we not watched Martellus Bennett getting better already?

He's hardly the first rookie to enter the NFL in need of maturation. Colossus has elite skills, a stern position coach and one of the best role models in the game at the top of the depth chart.

I'm excited.

Why?

The reason we dealt Fozzy to Miami is because Jason Garrett didn't think he could hold off Touchdown Tony Curtis for the second tight end job.

Fasano was unproductive, the offense won't even know he's gone.

No kidding we have vets on this team that took years before they matured. Adam Jones ring a bell. Bennett rolls his eyes and some freak out Pacman gets arrested 6 times and they yell give him a chance?

I said it then, I'll say it again. The cowboys won't regret picking Bennett and a bunch of people on here will eat crow.

Have you read some of the comments on this board?

People love the crow on here. Its so good people go out of there way to eat it.

Its always the House Special on the menu.
