Shortly after the NFL Draft, SMU coach June Jones visited Wade Phillips. And he made a bold statement ...

The Cowboys' best draft pick, Jones insisted, would be fifth guy they took. That would be Boise State CB Orlando Scandrick, whom June faced in the WAC in his days as Hawaii coach.

"He's not better than June Jones thought he was, I'll tell you that," Phillips said of Scandrick. "I hope he doesn't mind me quoting him, but he said, 'You know who the best player you got in the draft was?' And I said no, and he said, 'Scandrick.' He said he's going to better than all of them you got. I said, 'Really?'

"He said, 'I'm telling you, I've seen a lot of DBs and I was on the field seeing him,' and talked about his presence on the field during the game, and you don't see that (on film). He thinks he's going to be pretty good."

If you've watched the kid through two days of practice, I think you'd agree.

If he and Jenkins become what we hope, then the days of always needing better 3rd and 4th corners will be over.

Great sig pic Teague31.

I was at that NC game. That was one of the most amazing plays I've seen in over 40 years of watching football.

So that is Breer who is saying this? Since it's not in quotes, I assume it is.

My Internet has been down for about two days and I've completely missed the stuff coming out from the mini-camp. Has Scandrick been that impressive? So much so that the Dallas media has already noticed he's a player?

If so, that is really, really good.

That's pretty exciting jsut to think we have a chance to get great value in the 5th like that. It happens every year, so maybe it will for us this year.

Having said that, I always put a very heavy filter on what June Jones says about players on his team or in his conference. He oversold Colt Brennan so much that it made me wonder about his credibility--saying Colt was not at all a system QB. Good grief, if that was not a system QB that what was? He would have been a top 5 pick he he were not sytem QB with those stats.

Okay, I digress. I sure hope he is right about Scandrick.

good read....and I am excited to read we got a 5th rd steal zoners!

I really hope June Jones is right, both because I am a huge Dallas fan and because Scandrick played for my hometown U.
But Jones also called Colt Brennan the best QB in the nation, a lock for the Heisman, and the #1 pick in the draft. He missed a little on those predictions.
However, I think Jones may still be suffering from post traumatic stress from Scandrick's kick blocking exhibition at Hawaii his frosh year.

Well, he's pumping up his guy, so you would expect that. But why would he say the same about a kid not even on his team, unless he's convinced he's a good one.

No one knows for sure, but June's comments are promising.

Well, maybe it's why Scandrick is so mad about not being taken higher. Maybe he really deserved to be picked higher. Well, good. Let him have a chip on his shoulder. As long as it serves to motivate him and not deter him I'll be happy. You can't have enough CBs.

This sounds great.you add pacman to this and it is unreal. now we need Alan Ball and courtney Brown, to become players for us too. get brown ready to start at FS. and move Ken hamlin to his natural position of SS.

Depending on who you believe, he had a third or fourth round grade on most boards.

We shall see....

CHAMPIONSHIP!

This could be another 2005 draft, where from the get go we get several stud players contributing to the team!

Man I hope he's right. Our defense has the potential to be nasty this coming season.

It sounds like this year draft may be the best for the Cowboys in years....I hope so.

If by years you mean 2005 than I would hope so because 2006 looks bad and 2007 looks just okay so far.

2007 was meant to be a long term approach.... Spencer and Folk were the only ones expected to contribute early on.
