DMN Blog: Martellus Bennett's Hops

I think that's just part of the illusion of perspective that Adam was talking about.

ADam is right, look at where Martellus and the guys' feet are at, it's halfway towards the rim, not underneath, or in front of it

We are questioning whether a 6'6 guy with a 34 inch vert can hit his forearm, not even his elbow, on the rim? I'm 6'1 with the same vert and I can do that with a running start. Martellus prolly has about an 8'10 standing reach (I have an 8' even standing reach). With just his normal vert, he can get 18 inches above the rim. With a running start, I'm willing to bet he can hit his elbow on the rim. There's nothing even unbelievable about the pic. Some of you guys are just incredibly incredulous

I'd hope he can get that high, he's practically touching the rim with his feet on the floor.

30 year from now NBA rims are going to be 10.5 feet. I don't know if its genetics, weight training technology, better shoes, whatever - I don't remember guys being able to fly like they can today.

I agree, but I wonder if that sentence would fly if the word was "black" instead of "white" and the roles in the pic were reversed.
I'm not offended at all by it, but I'm sure some would be if the roles were reversed.

I just screwed up the fun of this thread, didn't I? Sorry about that.

They do need to get this guy the ball in the red zone...

I don't mind

Part of the fun of not having all your words scrutinized is that you can do crude racial jokes for fun without people getting all bent out of shape about it ;)

It would depend on how far he is from the rim. Like I said, if he's out away from the rim, then yes, it would be an optical illusion.

Look at this photo, is it two 7-footers above the rim, or is it two guards at the 3-point line?

Mario Chalmers, of course, is a 6-1 guard, and he was shooting a 3-pointer. But his hand looks like it's near the top of the square because of the camera angle.

I'm not saying Bennett can't get above the rim -- he's 6-6 and has a 34-inch vertical. I just think the effect could be exaggerated because of the camera angle.

The sight clues are very clear. The guy taking the charge's feet are on the ground on the side of the key a a few feet inside the free throw line. The free thow line is 15 feet from the backboard so lets say about 12 feet from the rim. Thats nowhere near the 3 point like which is 25 feet away.

Marty is coming from the weakside and is between the basket and the ball so he is at most 12 feet from the basket. Its more likely 6 feet.

Here's another meaningless offseason brain turd ... I think Bennett's progress this offseason might be single most important factor in the Cowboys offense for next year. He's the most important ingredient as to whether or not the Cowboys can implement a 2 TE base that teams have to respect the pass and the run. If he doesn't come through they're just going to put 8 men in the box against us. So I hope he's eating his Wheaties.

Are you smoking crack?

Off the top of my head

1) RW11 progression/jiving with Romo.
2) Felix Jones health.
3) Kyle Kosier's health
4) Romo developing ball protection (which he is reportedly doing)

are light years more important than our backup TE.

Looks like they dropped it to 9'.

What pictures are you looking at? It looks like they are almost touching the net. Even then there is a good amount of clearance between their hands and the net. They are nowhere near the rim.

This thread appears to be the offseason.
Don't tell me that. You know how much I hate the off season.

Now I'll be whining all day and it's all your fault. You could ruin wet dreams with your return to reality thinking.

Ain't it grand?

The only thing more amazing than the content of this thread and that it is currently 5 pages long, is that I actually read the whole thing.

Have you ever considered filling your mattress with Rice Krispies and then peeing the bed?

This issue obviously needs resolved before the season can begin. Does Martellus have the hops to get his head above the rim? Could this problem be solved by a photography major and a high school geometry student? Is the rim at regulation height? Was there a second shooter? Where in the world is Carmen San Diego?

No, but I have wondered what the % is of people who get out of the shower to use the toilet when they find they need to pee. Does that count?

Now I have angst and feel the weight of this dilemma. If I get an ulcer from this and die, I promise to haunt you for the rest of your life.
