Absolutely. You win some and you lose some but you at least give yourself an opportunity to gather more information so you can make an informed decision.

Furthermore, just because maturation is a huge part of players getting acclimated to the NFL especially Olinemen, it is not the only part. In some cases the player don't have the heart or the health to play.

If we gave up on every player that shown poorly is just one year then we wouldn't have much of a roster.

In most cases if you wait at least 3 years you will know what you have. I am just glad that Jerruh and co don't suffer from the same know it all knee jerk reaction that you do.

Two training camps and the mere thought of letting go of a player who's shown nothing is 'knee jerk'?

Sorry, but when the guy isn't even in the mix at this point, there's plenty of 'information gathered' - and none of it good.

It's funny how even Marten's most ardent defenders are unable to provide one shred of positive news about him...

Well of course ..... thats just it though .... and my whole point.

Apparently HH does not see anyone better ...... which leaves me to believe that Marten is not doing so bad and they see potential.

Now watch him get released tomorrow :laugh2:

And I will gladly eat a big plate of Crow.

Tell you what, it wouldn't make me feel good to be 'right' either.

I'd sincerely like to see the guy succeed, but again, if a better opportunity presents itself, I would rather see the team move on and admit they made a mistake rather than stubbornly hold onto him simply because he was a third round pick.

While we are at it lets go back and cut Romo and Barbar, hell they didn't show much in their first year.

Nice comparisons.....oh so accurate.....

You could be right.

This is the kid's big shot. If he comes through and plays at least to a level close to what Kosier has given the Cowboy, then McQ has won himself a decent contract with this club.

I think he'd have to out perform Koiser to even get any sort of consideration like that. You don't play "close to" how the guy in front of you played for a few games and win the job when the guy has started 32 straight games at that spot.

Jerry has already shown over and over again that he'll give a guy every opportunity to keep his job (see Julius Jones/Marion Barber, Terry Glenn/Patrick Crayton and Greg Ellis/Anthony Spencer) coming back from an injury.

McQ would have to play like a man on fire, and even then he probably would end up right back on the bench.

Pat McQuistan gets first crack at replacing Kyle Kosier

The Cowboys' initial answer to the question about how to replace Kyle Kosier is plugging in Pat McQuistan at left guard.
McQuistan is working there with the first team during today's practice, which was open to the media for only the first 30 minutes (routine procedure from here on out). McQuistan has played primarily right tackle for the Cowboys, but he has worked some at guard.

cant say I am not suprised. I am disapointed that marten is not good enough to go win this job. That has to be a setback for this team.

I don't see why this isn't a good thing. McQ was our best backup lineman last year...why would he not still be the best backup lineman? You want your best five guys on the field, and tackles often move to OG when there are injuries. I'd be more concerned if nobodies like Joe Berger and Cory Proctor were put there meaning they are better than McQ. Martin and Free were both projects and this is only their 2nd year...McQ has more experience and probably more strength.

I think it is a good thing. A very good thing if mcquistan wins that job.

The downside of Kyle Kosier's injury no one thinks about is that after adjusting to his replacement and hopefully becoming fluid after a month, the line must then adapt to K2 upon his return.

I'd rather see Kosier's replacement play so well that the job isn't available upon his return to health.

Nothing against Kosier. I just think that would be what was best for the team.

Nate Newton on playing Pat McQuistan at guard:

He's tall, he's bigger (than Kosier), I think it's a better move when you take a tackle and move him to guard. He's goes from dealing with open space and you close him in, it's like a security blanket.

Mentions Kevin Gogan going from right tackle to guard with his Boys teams.

Guys usually go to another level when moving from tackle to guard, versus the other way around. Nate moved from guard to tackle and then back to guard.

This is the ultimate move for McQ. If he handles this right, it's his job for years to come. He's young, has everything ahead of him. Says that if it was him, he'd tell his wife to shut everything up, Kosier would never see the job again.

That's how you have to be.

McQ is younger, quicker, stronger, doesn't know if he's as technically sound. Might not know the little knicknacks of the game as well. He can make up for that with his athleticism.

Mickey and Rob thought it would be Joe Berger yesterday, but McQ has worked first even though Wade did qualify that the spot is up for grabs. Spags said they wanted to try McQ at guard last year and couldn't with Flo and Cola being rested after off-season knee scopes. The rookie tackles weren't ready to be counted on.

Nate says Corey Procter is also your back-up center, but that he noticed two or three plays where he got blown into the backfield against the Texans. That shocked Nate, thought he played fairly well in spot duty last season.

He likes Doug Free, which should make it easier to play McQ at guard. Eric Williams and coach Hud think free has some kick to him.

Nate agrees with Jimmy Johnson, put your best five linemen on the field. He thinks adding McQ may be our best five.

played guard at Weber St., then Parcells moved him to tackle, maybe because of 2006 uncertainty of Columbo(and Fabini). Does McQuistan's left-handedness help him more on the left side?

I wouldn't think so.

Most linemen can play either side, they just need time to adjust their footwork after moving.

Thanks for that paraphrase Bluefin. I am very interested in seeing how he handles the position. He's athletic and big. This may be his best bet just like moving from tackle to guard was the best thing that happened to Bigg. I hope he pans out in there. I was hoping that Marten would be able to unseat Kosier eventually but oh well.

No problem.

I've been a McQ fan since we drafted him and I loved listening to Nate's high opinion of his prospects.

All I remember them saying about James Marten is that he just hasn't shown up. One of the regulars on the lunch break was thinking Marten was in danger of being released before Kyle Kosier's injury, but that was just his opinion.

I think he'll get another year before it comes to that.

Prior to Kosier's injury I wouldn't have been surprised to see Marten released. Especially in light of Austin, Burnett and Spencer going down for some time, Dallas may have had to go long on the WR and LB positions due to those injuries. The two spots that could've been affected by that would have probably been CB and OL.

From a standpoint of who can help the team this season I believe the CB's are more adept at that than Marten, so I would not have been shocked to see him get cut. He'll get another season now.

I hope the light comes on for this kid, I hate missing on these offensive line draft picks.

But that's the draft, a billion dollar guessing game.

I'm still surprised we selected Marten before Doug Free.

And I'm still mad we risked losing Jason Witten to tab Al Johnson.

How on earth did Wit last to the third round?

Just shows you how inexact the draft really is.

Also, like most forecast, the more info you get the more accurate your forecast becomes.

Same here. I wonder if the Parcells-Ireland braintrust is willing to trade something for him.

Teams spend millions of dollars preparing for the draft and in the end, they just don't know what they're getting until the player is on the field.

It's mesmerizing.

Who?

James Marten?

I doubt they'd offer anything of value for a player teetering on being a bust in only his second season.
