DMN Blog: McQuistan gets first crack at left guard

Sometimes one year of working in our off season weight conditioning program isn't enough time for a young OL to develop. Got no problem in giving Marten at least another year including participation of 09 offseason weight conditioning program. Seems to me that Marten should be ready to take that next step then.

Bentley is available - might be a Columbo like add.

He doesn't want Colombo-like pay and wants a starting job. Besides the Rams already have him in and he might get to start there.

It isn't just offensive linemen, either.

Sam Hurd has struggled keeping weight on his frame since joining the Cowboys and hopes using Terrell Owens' program tailored for his diet this past off-season will finally have done the job.

Therein may lie the problem. The more important question is will he be a Houck guy. At 315, McQ is even lighter than Gurode, not exactly the stereotype size/girth that Houck has preferred at OG in the past.

Houck was not that enamored of another Sparano/Parcells favorite earlier in TC either, Kosier.
Yeah, but McQ is bigger than the other guys...

Speaking of Houck, everyone mentioned Herring talking about the "bum" on Hard Knocks, but Houck was also on there talking about someone being "a little light in the ***". Wonder who that was... Maybe Marten or Procter.

I vote Proctor. He got pushed around last year at center and he has been on roller skates this preseason. Marten just looks weak, lost and clueless. Proctor looks like he positions himself well, but he gets overpowered.

I'll second that.

All the technique in the world can't seem to change the fact that Procter doesn't seem to have the necessary strength.

Proctor is a big reason I wanted us to get another option at center this year.

Pat McQuistan gets first crack at replacing Kyle Kosier

The Cowboys' initial answer to the question about how to replace Kyle Kosier is plugging in Pat McQuistan at left guard.
McQuistan is working there with the first team during today's practice, which was open to the media for only the first 30 minutes (routine procedure from here on out). McQuistan has played primarily right tackle for the Cowboys, but he has worked some at guard.

cant say I am not suprised. I am disapointed that marten is not good enough to go win this job. That has to be a setback for this team.

Really, is it a setback that a 7th rounder is outperforming a 3-4th rounder.

I don't think it is a setback, you got McQuistan for little to nothing. Evens out in the wash doesn't it.

The McQ sexiness runs in the family:lmao2:

Other then looking like a serial killer I think the kid has a legitimate shot of winning the job. Game recognition will be key but if he can over come that he has the physical attributes to handle the job.

I am not so sure if Kosier would win his job had the coaches opened it up to competition with McQ.

You could be right.

This is the kid's big shot. If he comes through and plays at least to a level close to what Kosier has given the Cowboy, then McQ has won himself a decent contract with this club.

Maybe this is an overreaction, but we have some serious problems in identifying and developing OL prospects. If I were Jerry I would look into the problems we have in that area.

None of our young OL have developed to the point they are able to push the starter or for that matter fill in for an injured starter. I hope McQuistan is up to the task.

Holy crap Captain! Many experts around the league say we have the best offensive line in the NFL and Kosier is part of that as well. Just who are they supposed to beat? I was not a proponent of signing Flozell back but that was because of the money involved and the drive killing false starts but he is still really good. Who are these young men supposed to beat out? It's not like they are playing against the Peterman's and Roger's of the NFL. THey are competing against a line full of pro-bowlers. Good grief! :bang2:

I would point out that when they did get on the field, almost none of the backups looked like they were ready to play at the NFL level, to say nothing of challenging to start.

It would be one thing if they at least looked capable.

But they haven't.

I cannot believe people have given up on Marten and Free after one year.

I sure haven't given up on Free, but if someone could show me one positive thing regarding Marten, I would love to see it.

Nobody's come through on that request so far...

He is a young 24 year old kid who is still on the squad and had a decent camp behind Pro Bowl players.

and more importantly

He is not a 6 year Veteran who ate his way of 3 rosters and has not shown anything in 3 years.
