Rookie cornerback report

Fifth-round pick Orlando Scandrick couldn't work out because of an infection in his left eye. He said he hopes to be cleared to work out next week.

First-round pick Mike Jenkins was involved in a couple highlight plays during the limited 11-on-11 action during today's workout. Patrick Crayton burned Jenkins on a fly route for a touchdown. Jenkins made a spectacular interception on a deep ball to Isaiah Stanback minutes earlier, forcing Stanback to the sideline and leaping to catch the ball at its highest point.

There is a lot of talk around these parts about how much more flexibility the Cowboys will have with their defensive calls because of the cornerback depth. That requires the rookies to be ready to contribute right away, and the veterans plan to do their part to make sure that happens.

Anthony Henry has been a mentor to fellow South Florida alum Jenkins for years, and Terence Newman considers it part of his job description to take the rookies under his wing, much like Darren Woodson did for him.

"It's my responsibility to help them out as much as possible," Terence Newman said. "I keep asking them during installation, 'Hey, are you getting everything?' I'm making sure they feel comfortable and trying to let them know that if they have any questions, they can ask me whatever they need to and lean on me in that way."

Glenn doesn't participate in OTA workout

We knew that FS Ken Hamlin (contract situation) and SS Roy Williams (family vacation) wouldn't be on the field today. WR Terry Glenn was the only other veteran who didn't participate in today's OTA workout.

Glenn was at Valley Ranch for meetings yesterday, according to Terrell Owens. He plans to continue to rehabilitate his knee and play next season, but the Cowboys don't have a timetable for when Glenn will be back on the field.

You might think that the Cowboys would plan not to have Glenn, who was a nonfactor in the regular-season finale and playoff game after sitting most of the season. But Tony Romo expects Glenn, who will turn 34 this summer, to be an impact player in 2008.

"He's very much in mind," said Romo, who raved about Glenn's ability. "I think Terry Glenn is going to surprise a lot of you guys."

Patrick Crayton burned Jenkins on a fly route for a touchdown.

 I thought Crayton was too slow to burn anyone ... according to some posters in this forum. Good on Crayton.

Crayton is a very good player who had developed very well. I just hope he has learned to shut his mouth and play the game.

A lot of fans wouldn't be on his case, despite his poor play in the Giants game, if he wasn't such a loud mouth numbskull.

Not at all! He just usually stops running for no reason so people just think he is slow.

Yeah, but word is that Crayton has called a 5 PM press conference to publicly call out Jenkins for tomorrow's practice!

Honestly, that's probably more of a negative statement on Jenkins than a positive for Crayton. And as for the INT, I'm not sure what he means by "forced" Stanback to the sideline. Might be a PI call.

I agree. If he can improve more this year and just keep his mouth shut he will be one of my favorite players. His smack talk really turned me off.

Looks like Jenkins had a typical rookie day...and yes that is more of a negative on him than a positive on Crayton. Simply because a 5 year vet is supposed to be able to beat a rookie in his first OTA.

"Forced Stanback" may mean that he had inside position on the ball so well that in trying to get separation, Stanback ran too close to the sideline. At least that's how I took it.

Is this not all one big DeJaVu from last season.

These are passing drills, everything is in the favor of the wrs. There is no pass rush so the qb can survey the whole field. The cbs also aren't able to be as physical without pads on in man coverage. Thats why in years past that Anthony Henry always had reports about being burned in minicamps.

Says they were 11 on 11s. If it's pass plays only, then the defense has the advantage in 11 on 11s.

Crayton has that tricky speed and he can get by a CB sometimes, but he isn't going to outrun most CB's on a deep ball if they are side by side.

Jenkins will be solid in time. Stanback has to start being the guy who makes plays because he has a lot of competition on this team.

Terry Glenn. I don't know. His status reminds me more and more of the Terrell Davis situation that played out in Denver a few years back. Davis did all he could do to get back on the field, but in the end the body just wasn't capable of holding up to the NFL life any longer.

I am not surprised Glenn is not practicing yet his knee is all but toast in fact I would not be surprised if he does not play this year and ends of retiring this year.

I like the way Terry Glenn has played since he's been in Dallas so I'm really hoping he comes all the way back & can really contribute big time to our efforts to win the SB. But I'm also a realist & don't believe 50-50 chance is good news on a 34 year old WR who essentially missed all of the 07 season. Supposedly he's going to participate in the mid June minicamp but we'll get a far better feel in TC. But I believe before the end of TC that Glenn & the Cowboys will both realize it's not going to happen. In the meantime I have no doubt that Jerry will be searching far and wide for any vet WR he feels can really help us -- if only for 1-2 year.

Are you seriously comparing a guy who's facing a possible career ending injury and who is opting to postpone a surgical procedure that could affect his longterm health for the rest of his life for one last chance to play football ......with .... a guy who's not attending the team workouts because he'd rather go on a "family vacation" (just a few weeks before the entire organization breaks for pre-training camp vacations)?

Wow ... just, wow.
