The players wear helmets, T-shirts and shorts for these practices, which are heavy on teaching. In other words, there isn't necessarily a whole lot of competition or action.

But here are some things that stuck out:

*The difference in the arm strength of the two quarterbacks is alarming. Stephen McGee gets some serious zip on the ball. Rudy Carpenter throws rainbow out routes. But McGee wasn't accurate on some throws and didn't put good touch on several short throws.

*McGee's inaccuracy gave seventh-round WR Manuel Johnson the chance to display his ability to adjust to the ball. He made one nice catch on a ball that was high and behind him and snared another pass off his shoetops.

*Third-round LB Jason Williams' burst is what you'd expect from a guy who clocked a 4.49 40. He showed that when he broke up a pass in the flat. But Williams has a long way to go if he's going to play in the nickel and dime packages this season. Sixth-round TE John Phillips, who doesn't have good speed, used his body to get separation from Williams and catch a post route from Carpenter.

*Seventh-round CB Mike Mickens acknowledged that he was "real rusty," but he said his knee feels fine. He recovered after stumbling coming out of a backpedal on a deep route to undrafted WR Julian Hawkins and got turned around on a Manual Johnson crossing route.

*Sixth-round ILB Stephen Hodge, who played safety at TCU, had trouble covering tight ends in his first day at his new position. I'll have more from him on that later. TE Rodney Hannah, who spent the last two seasons on the practice squad, beat Hodge badly twice. But Hodge showed his resiliency on one of those plays, chasing Hannah down 40 yards downfield and jarring the ball loose.

*Ryan Gibbons (6-4, 318), who spent last season on the practice squad, is primarily playing center. He played tackle in college and has been used mostly at guard in the pros (NFL Europe, Jaguars practice squad, Cowboys practice squad). If Gibbons proves he can play center, he could challenge Cory Procter for a roster spot.

*Undrafted TE Jamar Hunt worked as a deep snapper after practice.

I forgot about Hannah....wasn't the word he was coming on real strong last off-season? Maybe he'll break out this season (i.e., breakout in the sense that he could be an active roster player).

Busts, the whole lot of them.

If we're lucky, Manny Johnson can make the practice squad.

Oh, and I'm a big fan of Rodney Hannah. If he can block at all, I think he can be a real player. Guy is huge and a great athlete -- kind of like Martellus, but maybe faster. He just needed to bulk up and learn to block.

Michael Irvin is headed out to the camp right now. Can't wait til Monday's show to see what he has to say. Hopefully Hodge can step it up. After watching his interview, I'm rooting for that guy...
