Roy Williams appreciates all the Cowboys legends who think he sucks

Roy Williams turned an innocuous question about his impressive last week of training camp into a review session of the criticism aimed his way this off-season.

"That's you guys," Williams said. "Once again, I suck as a wide receiver. Any time I catch four or five balls in practice, I took it to another gear. But I'm just the same guy.

"I'm the same sorry wide receiver that Jerry traded for to get out of Detroit. That's me."

Actually, none of the four critics whose comments Williams remembers best were in front of his locker this morning. He specifically mentioned four members of the '90s Cowboys dynasty who now have high-profile media jobs: Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders and Darren Woodson.

In one breath, Williams said he finds the criticism funny and doesn't consider it motivational fodder. Moments later, he said he appreciates the Cowboys' legends ripping him because it keeps his head an appropriate size.

"I appreciate it because if you sit around and have to hear how good you are all the dang time, you have to have that Jerry Rice mindset of, 'I'm not good enough,' all that stuff," Williams said. "When I have guys, especially NFL greats and the greatest that played here in Dallas, saying that I can't get the job done and I'm not a No. 1, it makes me feel good.

"It makes me want to go out there and prove to them and everybody else across the world who listens to those guys - because obviously everybody thinks they know it all - that I can do my job."

===

Is there now any question he's abnormally sensitive?

As much as the criticisms need to stop, he needs to get over it.

Using it as motivation isn't getting over it??? Thats what you are supposed to do when you receive criticism..

If he uses it for motivation thats great for him.

If I was in his position though and had been a Cowboy fan all my life and had my favorite players saying I sucked I would think that would hurt a bit!

when you're asked the same asinine questions day after day about whether you can be the number one receiver, what do you expect to happen... as far as I'm concerned, the media should have access to players one day a week for questions, that's it

Michael Irvin had a few remarks about this on his show. It was interesting when Mike talked to Roy about Mike's opinions in San Antonio and Roy didn't say anything back to him.

I look forward to seeing RW prove his doubters wrong. Even Troy during the Tenn game said he has been critical of RW but acknowledge the hard work and conditioning RW has done this off season. I'm not concerned with him putting up TO numbers I want post season success and if RW can contribute to that I'll be more than pleased.

Exactly. Who cares if he's "sensitive"? Sounds like he's using the criticism as a chip on his shoulder. He's hardly the first football player to do that.

I don't think he's being overly-sensitive, I think he's just being honest. And I love that he's remembering what they said because he's using it to push himself, which is exactly what we need him to do. Here's hoping for a big year for Roy 11.

"Roy, why are you such an insufferable, unlikeable crybaby?"

BTW, which legend said he "sucked"? Guys like Troy and Mike have publicly noted that he was underwhelming last year and is under a lot of pressure to perform in 2009, which is undeniably true.

Well, first off, Troy calling him out on his lazy route running skills had to hurt despite being 100% on the money...He's got thin skin, that's for sure...Easiest thing for any professional athlete to do, particularly when faced with criticism, is to perform...If he doesn't, he can tell all the jokes he likes because the criticisms will continue to mount...If he does, no one will care about the criticism

Troy and Mike both said that he's among the worst route runners in the NFL and questioned his work ethic. That's going a little further than what you're claiming, but may not reach the level of "sucks."

Troy has backed down quite a bit, though, and seems pretty impressed with him this offseason and preseason.

It is not as if RW is sitting around crying he went out and did something this off season to give himself a chance to prove his doubter wrong. He dropped some weight was at VR on a reg basis and spent extra time with Romo.

Yeah, I think those things are all good things...I hope he produces and can help the team...I'm just saying, he's gotta focus on getting it done on the field and letting the criticisms go...He's not playing on the Lions where expectations etc. are pretty average, after all...Being a WR on the Cowboys comes with a ton of pressure

They've seen him do well in the NFL (one season in particular), so they know he doesn't technically "suck." What they'd like to see him do is reach his full potential.

Where would the Dallas media be if it wasn't for the existence of he-said, he-said drivel? I swear, two-thirds of their focus is on who said what and what who thinks about who saying what. It's like they never left third grade.

I don't care how he motivates himself I just want him to do the job. People talk about how they would respond to a question well that is good for them but we are not all alike. RW I think knows what is on the line and has done the things he knows he has to do to get ready and if playing with a bit of a chip on the shoulder helps push him even more then great.

I have no problem with Roy W saying this or using it as motivation during his career.

I also have no problem with the Cowboys legends saying anything they want about the boys ...... because they earned that right through blood, sweat, career ending injuries, and Superbowl Championships.
