Roy's contract basically has two things. 1st is the bonus money which is due to Roy (and is not refundable, except under extreme circumstances [see Michael Vick]) at signing. For salary cap purposes, that amount is spread evenly over the length of contract, though it's already paid. If the player is cut before the contract runs it's length, the remaining part of those hits you spread over the length of the contract get accelerated and count as dead cap. That money is already paid to Roy, so he doesn't get anything additional.

The second element is the salaries, and those aren't guaranteed and so therefore do not count on the cap until the season begins.

well as it clearly says. if dallas released roy june 1st, the team would actually gain 3.7 mil on the cap this yr.

so its not out of the question. i dont see why u people think if dallas releases him it would be the end of the cap for dallas.

And what? Cost us almost $5 mil in dead cap space money in '09?

That's not good cap management.

BTW, show me some stats on how you base that Roy is the worst safety in football?

Do I think the guy is great? Hell no. But there's a huge difference between not living up to your contract and previous level of play and being someone this team should cut. Yeah, I know, you watch one football game a week and that makes you an NFL personnel expert.
