T.O.'s words for the day

Albert Breer E-mail News tips

I thought the question was pretty simple: Terrell Owens, how will having a year under your belt in Jason Garrett's system help the offense as a whole. And T.O., being the entertainer he is, took it and ran with it.

"I'm going to use two words for you today," Owens said. "I would say last year, this offense was a little 'transfixed.' This year, Jason, he's added some new wrinkles to the offense. And so the offense will be a little more 'contoured' this year. So those are the words for the days, 'transfixed' as it was last year, and 'contoured' this year."

Because this is an educational blog, and I know T.O.'s all about helping kids in that way, we're going to take his idea and run with it ourselves. Here's what Owens' words for the day ....

trans·fix
-verb (used with object), -fixed or fixt, fix·ing.
1. to make or hold motionless with amazement, awe, terror, etc.
2. to pierce through with or as if with a pointed weapon; impale.
3. to hold or fasten with or on something that pierces.

con·toured, con·tour·ing, con·tours
1. To make or shape the outline of; represent in contour.
2. To build (a road, for example) to follow the contour of the land.

So basically, expect a streamlined version of the 2007 attack.

Cowboys brass still loves Roy Williams

Roy Williams got a whole lot of 1-on-1 love during today's workout. Secondary coach Dave Campo, safeties coach Brett Maxie, defensive coordinator Brian Stewart and owner/GM Jerry Jones all spent significant time chatting up the perennial Pro Bowl safety/media dartboard.

We didn't get a chance to ask Williams about those conversations or anything else. He slipped out of a back door after practice instead of dealing with the media horde.

Jerry and Wade Phillips did what they could to try to take heat off of Williams.

"I have said how much I have his back and feel strongly that Roy is a player that's going to help this team get where we want to be," Jerry said.

Wade went on a pretty good pro-Roy rant that will require you to follow the jump to read.

"I hate to see somebody get bashed, and it's kind of been a Roy Williams bash here for some reason. Roy didn't give up a deep pass last year - not one. I don't know if you could say that previously, because I wasn't here then, but he did not give up a deep pass.

"He can do better, but he was voted into the Pro Bowl. He was our second-leading tackler missing two games, so he had a lot of positive last year that I think people are overlooking.

"I think you can ask Roy and our coaches and so forth, we're going to try to improve him, along with Terence Newman, who made the Pro Bowl last year, along with Tony Romo, who made the Pro Bowl. We're working with our guys.

"When they talk to him, I guess they think he's trying to defend himself, but the guy had a pretty good season. He was on a 13-3 team. Pass defense wise, we were in the top five, and he didn't give up a big play.

"From a reasonable standpoint, I can't see all the bashing."

Can somebody please remind me of an impact play made by Williams last season?

Didn't give up a deep pass? Second leading tackler? Clearly he's a liability.

Not according to The HC, the owner, or his probowl teammate Terrence Newman, but then, what are they supposed to say to the media?

Only what you (and others) want to hear them say about Roy, so it seems.

Not trying to add fuel to this fire, but for every one of those quotes, there's one of these:

"He's the same guy, I just think sometimes he gets a deer-in-the-headlights type of reaction to some plays. Not everybody's going to have a perfect season. He had a bad season last year, as far as coverage."

Much like there are two sides to the argument here.

I never said a thing about misinterpreting anything (although you did a fine job of it on my post).

What I said was that everyone wants "The HC, the owner, or his probowl teammate Terrence Newman" say to the media exactly what they want to hear in order for their own thoughts to be justified. (i.e. "zOMg hez Da suXXorsz!!1111")

And what about Terence saying he gets that same look sometimes too? What about Newman saying he wasn't a liability?

Liability is a pretty serious condemnation of his abilities.

It's one thing to say the guy needs to improve, but saying he's a liability would have created an unnecessary PR mess.

Newman is an intelligent guy, he knows what can and cannot be said to the media.

I wouldn't categorize his comments as flattering toward Roy.

Awwwwwgggggggghhhhhh!

When Wade is curled up on his death bed, he'll be mumbling "13-3, 13-3 ..."

Congratulations, Coach Phillips.

Now shut up and win in January.

I always wondered why Parcells would keep the media at bay. Now I can see why. I am a big newman fan but no way does he get credit for callin out a player in the media. He said some good things but he also added to the problem. You just don't do that, in any sport. You keep all buisness in the lockerroom.

I just don't understand this sort of mentality. We were 13-3 and the #1 seed in the NFC. Is that not something to be proud of? Is that not a commendable accomplishment? Good god. I understand being upset about not winning it all, but 31 teams don't win it all every single year.

He never stops saying it. It's his mantra.

If he goes 13-3 again and loses in the first round of the playoffs again, he'll be fired, IMO.

He had a great regular season. Congrats to him. But he let his team coast in December and it caught up with them when the playoffs started.

His post-season press conference where he talked about making the "Elite 8" made me want to puke.

Dallas hasn't won a playoff game in 12 years or so and Wade has never won a playoff game. Watch this team late last season and you can see why.

It's not about the regular season.

This team had Super Bowl aspirations, from Jerry Jones on down to us fans. That was reasonable.

It's my opinion that Wade just doesn't get it.

It's a shame he'd be held accountable for the team not winning a playoff game in 12 years, when he'd have only been here for 2, going 26-6 in that span. How ********. Seriously, that's just stupid.
