Mara gave Coughlin a mandate that he had to change his approach with his players. Management had long felt Coughlin was too tough on them. It seemed ludicrous that an old-school coach such as Coughlin, after 11 years as an NFL head coach, could find another way to do business.
To his credit, he did.
I asked Michael Strahan if the old Coughlin could have gotten the Giants to the Super Bowl this season. "I don't think so," he said. "The changes made everyone feel a lot more comfortable being here. It made everybody buy into the system. It was more of a human element. Everybody feels like we are family, not just a bunch of players and coaches."
How does that make a difference on game day? "That makes all the difference in the world," Strahan said.
It inspires the players to fight in the fourth quarter and care even more. "I don't think we would have that type of resolve when we were down in a lot of those situations that we do right now," he said.
The change in Coughlin at this point in his coaching career surprised Strahan. "I've never seen anything done like that before," he said.
Coughlin said the changes were all about the team concept. "I think the changes I made have helped enhance the belief in team," he said.
In his way, he acknowledged that the changes helped get the Giants to the Super Bowl. "The record is that we did change and we are here," he said.
New T-shirts arrived in each Giant's locker at practice. Across the front was Coughlin's slogan, "Talk Is Cheap. Play The Game," with the Super Bowl logo. Considering some of the yapping the Giants have done this week, the move was appropriate.
Coughlin showed the players he cared about them this season. "That meant a lot to the players," Justin Tuck said. "It kind of made him look more like a human being than a tyrant."
