DMN Blog: Time to get Victor Butler more playing time?

i cannot disclose this information... for fear of further banning. but yeah go vic buter, i wonder if the coaching staff is worried about his coverage ability or something along those lines.

well, you're getting banned again

anyone think his playing time has been limited due to lack of coverage ability or play recognition ? holding players back till the end of the season is stupid and out of the question. so yeah?

OrakHO is having a pretty good year, surprised
Well when your defense is on the field the entire game you should get a lot of sacks.

you know, for a mod, you're not very vigilante

most just want Butler's snaps to increase, not necessarily replace Spencer outright

in fact, many people think Spencer's skills make him a great guy to have on every 1st and 2nd down snap, but just have Butler see more time on 3rd down

I don't know why the coaches are afraid to play Butler, the dude is very smart

I drink your milkshake...

Its not just Spencer that needs to be replaced. Butler needs to get about 15-30 snaps a game and take some from Ware as well. Both Spencer and Ware would be more effective if they were allowed to take a breather.

agreed

I dunno, I focus on Spencer a lot on passing downs ... he just looks like he has very little explosion off the snap to me. The reason he never 'turns the corner' or 'completes the play' is because he never gets the offensive tackle off-balance or on his heels off the snap that would make him vulnerable.

Spencer reminds me of those catchers in baseball who supposedly "call a great game". I've noticed that all those catchers who supposedly "call a great game" all bat around .200. It's uncanny how every catcher who bats .200 supposedly "calls a great game". It's like people look for justification why you keep starting a guy who is a black hole in your lineup, well ... it has to be that he "calls a great game". So it is with a rush end who is "solid against the run". He's not making any plays ... BUT he's solid against the run. Great, might as well start another nosetackle and get the same result.

After training camp and Carolina Panthers game I wanted to see him get more playing time, because he plays with a high motor.

Where's Marcus Steele when you need him? He is better then both Spence and Butler. This wouldn't be an issue if Dallas had STEELE still..

You brung back old memories. Marcus Steele was a average player with a lot of hype.

Wasn't Miles Austin considered an average player with a lot of hype until this year? Mixing in some Victor Butler for 30% of the plays won't hurt anything at all. It would serve a two fold purpose by getting Butler some valuable experience and keeping Spencer fresh.

No. Because if he was he would've been getting more playing time after the bucs game. It took 4 years to get Miles Austin into the starting line-up.

Butler reminds me of another high motor guy that worked his way onto the field, Jay Ratliff.

I remember reading about Butler after he was drafted and the knock on him were the following:

Tweener, relies on agility to avoid blockers as he has difficulty shedding them...Plus the typical concerns about the switch from DE to LB, particularly when it comes to coverage.

Perhaps it's that adjustment to LB in pass coverage, especially, that is limiting his reps...Although, could he be a lot worse than Spencer?

Good Point.

Yep. Good point there. Remember that game (against the Giants?) where he got in for 5 plays and ended up with a stat line of 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble? That's maximizing your opportunity!!

He shouldn't be starting over spencer but he should atleast be in there to give Demarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer some breathers. Victor Butler motor reminds me of Outside Linebacker from Texas, Kalen Thorton.
