A day after Roy Williams' streak of 90 consecutive streaks was snapped, a run that dates to his very first day of professional football, his coach said that it really was no big deal.

It was a different look, to be sure. I've heard some say it was nickel, but it looked more to me like a hybrid between that and the team's base look. There were only four DBs on the field, three of them corners, and LB Kevin Burnett was out there, indicating the team was playing nickel defense.

But the team was lined up in a 3-4 front, which is what made it seem like this was a bit of a 'tweener defense (that showed little respect for Kellen Clemens' ability to beat the 'Boys, by the way.) Phillips said the reason Roy wasn't out there was because the Jets had three receivers on the field, and the Cowboys wanted to match up with a third corner, which indicates that the team is more comfortable with Ken Hamlin in coverage than Williams (hardly surprising.)

“It had nothing to do with (Williams),” Phillips said. “I mean, he's a starter. Because of the first play, that doesn't make you a non-starter, in my opinion. He played the whole game.”

I wonder if the NFL, over time, will phase out the SS position and go to something more like this. I know the same was said about the FB position and while there aren't as many as there used to be, it's still very common.

You almost need an extra person back there dedicated to defending the pass with how well teams are throwing it right now.

I don't care who you are, you cannot continue to be the other team's #1 target/whipping boy week after week and not get phased out. We should see more and more nickle and dime packages that do not include Roy Williams. We've already seen Burnett on the field seemingly much more that Akin. I think the same will happen with Williams. The writing will be on the wall next offseason if they bring in another safety or draft one.

let's not go overboard, I hightly doubt we draft or bring in another SS in offseason. Not with Roy's current contract...unless we could somehow offload him.

It's just a matter of putting the right personnel on the field, and I agree that on obvious passing downs RW needs to be on the bench. He's being targeted by any decent OC, and something needs to be done to change it. This is just a message to OC's that we're going to mix things up. And on running plays, Roy is still a beast.

I've had similar thoughts the last few years. Especially since we have a very good SS who unfortunately plays the run better than the pass.

Look at next three BIG games: Packers in week 12, most likely Packers in NFC Championship and Pats in SB.

These teams throw the ball a lot more often and a lot better than they run it. They also employ a 3 WR base offense.
What good is Roy doing us on the field, unless its at Nickle LB?

Could care less about if he starts or not, I just wish he'd wear his uniform in a more 'attractive manner'. The baggy sleeves are hideous, and as Jerry Rice taught T.O. Gotta look good to play good.

Completely unrelated: My high school coach would always put in the seniors that were scrubs at the very beginning of the game, so their names would get called and the parents of the unfortunately unathletic kid would feel good about their child 'starting'. Very good method if any of you are coaches and are having 'parent' issues.
