When Bill Parcells knew it was over

Bill Parcells will be on HBO's Real Sports Tuesday (9 p.m.) and not long after the heartbreaking playoff loss to Seattle did he know he coached his last game.

Here's an excerpt: "We'd just lost to Seattle and I'm flying back. I'm sitting up with the pilots, you know, I have a little fear of flying so I ride up in the cockpit. And I said, 'This is probably going to be my last trip.' And you just know. You don't want to go through the whole process again, to get to right where we were. You know? And all you got to do is kick a field goal, the most elementary of plays, and then you just don't do it. And so I don't want to go through that process again. Too much blood."

Parcells also said he's not sure where he will watch games this year, but he said he won't be calling down to the sidelines during games to Tony Sparano.

There is a silver lining to it IMO.

He helped get this team talented instead of drafts like QC and the three amigos.

We went from a probowler or two to quite a few more.

The other thing is...I am glad he left when his heart was not in it instead of milking another years worth of money.

I wonder what goes through Romo's mind when he hears this.

Me too. I actually will always have fond memories of him here, and I really do hope he finds nothing but success in Miami. All the Bill haters really are short sighted in the type of guy he really was. He is just old school... he was how all the old school coaches were. Tough as nails.

He wasn't a great fit for this team as a coach.. but he knew what players would make this team better... and he did that. If we win the Superbowl this year, Jerry needs to at least send him a basket of fruit or something.

I think Jerry has already been more than generous.

Understand Romo already said months ago that he felt to blame for forcing Parcells into retirement. However, Parcells stayed around VR even after his announced retirement to talk to Romo cause he knew how badly Romo felt.

Frankly I've always felt that Parcells can't escape some responsibility for what happened. No other starting QB in the NFL also serves as the FG holder; the starting QB (particularly a new one like Romo) should have been on the sidelines talking to Parcells & others about what our offense should be doing next. But Parcells didn't have the balls to tell Bledsoe (or Crayton) he'd should take over holder responsibilities once Romo was obviously going to remain our starter. Appreciate Parcells loyalty to his older players, but he had a greater loyalty to the Cowboy team and it's newly starting QB.

I agree! At the time, Parcells was the best thing to happen to this Cowboy team. Oh...please don't mention QC...it brings back bad memories.

Hate the man, but, if not for him during his time here, no telling what this team would be like today! Well, maybe like the Commanders?

;)

I detect an FAA violation. I wonder if the pilot asked him if he liked gladiator movies.

Yep. Seriously though, in light of 9-11, I thought there were no exceptions--charter flight or no charter flight.

Dude! Does Parcells look like he came from the Middle East!!

:laugh2:

Besides...those pilots were probably scared to tell him "No"!

Even if the FG would have been made, I still had a feeling that the Seahawks would have just marched right back and kicked a game winning FG.

You already know this, but you will find folks on this site who will dispute both of your points. They might say...

1) It wasn't that tough to improve the talent base when we finally kept our draft picks and finally had the cap in manageable condition. Plus Jerry was also part of that talent improvement.

2) Parcells was already burned out when he arrived here or shortly thereafter. He was already a shadow of his former self.

I too am glad he came here. The team is a competitor because he
did turn this franchise around.I'm sorry they lost that game and in
some ways felt cheated. But,i am a Dallas Cowboy fan and i will always
root for our team.I wish the man success in Miami.

I wish Parcells all the success in Miami too. After three years of Campo, I was thrilled when he came here. Back then I didn't think the Cowboys knew what they were doing. Quincy or Chad? Get real. Neither one of them was ever going to lead us to the SB. I'm sorry his coaching career ended like it did but I can understand how he felt. Plus he's not young. He's going to be in the HOF so he doesn't need that stress anymore. Romo is young. He bounced back and I'm sure he'll bounce back from last season's playoff loss too. The main thing is we got a team of pro bowlers and we have Parcells to thank for a lot of that.
