Phillips on defense: not great, but getting better

Now that he's had a bye week to reflect, how does Wade Phillips assess the performance of his defense.

"I don't think we're playing great yet, but I think we're playing well,'' Phillips said. "It's a pretty solid unit.''

The rank No. 22 in yards allowed and have held teams to an average of 19.6 points.

"I don't know what the ranking is, but we've played well the last several games,'' Phillips said. "It's how you play the next game. It's not how you're ranked or how many turnovers you did or didn't have. It's how many you get in this game.

"The important thing is the game coming up.''

Why Phillips doesn't apologize for wins

Wade Phillips refuses to apologize for wins, no matter how ugly they might be. You want a reason why? Here it is:

Oakland 13, Philadelphia 9.

"It's hard to win in this league,'' Phillips said. "When I first started pro football, somebody asked me about it and I said, 'every play is a crisis.' We have to make this play, we need to make this first down.'

"To reach your peak performance every week is not easy, and we see that every week.''

That sounds exactly like something the last coach would say. :)

What week did we reach our peak performance? Because all I can say to that is "oh crap".

Wade should patent his Magical Excuse Machine.

Nobody on the planet was happier than Wade about the Eagles loss yesterday. It gave him yet another excuse for his team's poor play this season.

I think Wade Phillips ate Bill Parcells. What you just heard was a burp. :laugh2:

He needs to just realize that the abnormal expectations/criticism in Dallas will not change and just throw out meaningless coach-speak every time he gets in front of a mic.

He was talking about better teams losing to inferior ones, like the Eagles yesterday. I thought that was obvious.

I'm not here to nit-pik Wade. I'm not currently a member of GROW.

But I did want to point out that comments like these from Wade are what reinforce the perception that he sugarcoats things too often instead of meeting the challenge head on.

Wade doesn't want to talk about the rankings of his defense (unless they're good see 13-3), only how they will play the next game.

Wade also wants to remind us how difficult it is to give your peak performance every week.

I think it would help his perception, and perhaps even his results if he would say "The performance of our defense thus far is not acceptable, and it must improve going forward" and then "You have to have consistent excellence to win in this league. Certainly that is what we're striving towards."

Wade's comments too often sound like he is making excuses.

There is nothing unrealistic about expecting to not go to OT against Kansas City or needing a late INT to avoid losing at home to Carolina

Some people are satisfied with close wins against awful teams in September. I'm not. Good teams do what they are supposed to do more often than not against awful teams. Sure, I can understand one bad game, but we have struggled to put away 3 teams with a combined 3 wins and in all honesty should have lost to one of them.

Wade has given us NOTHING in his time here or anywhere else to suggest he will turn this around. The only reason he still has any support around here is because he was lucky enough to play 3 of the worst teams in football early to pad his record.

Guess it depends on your agenda. I read it the way you did.

The defense (specifically the secondary) just needs to start making plays in big time situations. I was glad to see it in the Carolina game. But the end of the Giants and Cheifs games are not acceptable. They simply just drove down the field at will. That has to be fixed.

Only in Dallas does a head coach say the only thing that matters is this game coming up and the fans conclude he's making excuses. At what point did we completely stop paying attention to what's being said in favor of our masochistic fantasies? Was it after the Denver loss?

Yes, it was obvious that what you were talking about was not what the coach or blog entry were talking about.

While Wade is still in my doghouse and most likely will remain there I think you may be on to something.

"Refuses to apologize for win" - is that talking about the next game? Or the last one? What is it with you?

The bigger the tent, the more clowns show up - thanks Jerreh for the circus, it's not just on the field anymore, now it's in the fanbase.

Thanks, as that's kind of what I was thinking.
Pretty pathetic isn't it, that there are more hater fans for this team.
I had my moments, not then when the senses come back, it's back to....let's win the next game and keep on winning......

Never mind that wasn't a direct quote.

As much as the offense needs to cut down on turnovers, this defense needs to start creating them. Its been a consistent problem all last year and so far this year.

We will never be a top tier defense and Wade's ticket will be punched here year end if they don't vastly improve that in the next 11 games.

Sure thing Mr. "zOMG we're never gonna win another game again and we're not in competition for the NFC East or Wild Card spots."

On the spectrum of expectations/criticism you're at the extreme irrational end.
