DMN Blog: Williams Will Be Traded or Released

I personally don't think he is a bad player, he is just the wrong type of safety for the wrong time. If he was in the league 15-20 years ago, he would be a HOFer easily. However, times have changed. Safties need to have strong coverage skills in today's NFL. Having Roy as a starter hurts the team and the value that we get is not worth the money spent.

If his deal could be restructured and his role limited, I would still like him on the team. His days as the starter have passed, and it isn't anything against him personally.

I would love to keep him as a short yardage, run stopping specialist, but for him, that role may be a bit insulting. IMO, this is the reasoning of the Cowboys which is why they want to give him the opportunity to start elsewhere because he will not start again in Dallas.

To be quite truthful I don't care to discuss it with his detractors. My apologies if that offends, but I am tired of going round and round about him.
Personally, I think Roy's a great guy to have on the team attitude wise. He has a great sense of humor but has great leadership ability.

I think his physical abilities just aren't what they used to be 2-3 years ago. There has to be a team-first approach to things; sometimes parting ways is what's best for the team. He's not wholly un-usable though. If he could re-negotiate a smaller deal, I'd be happy to see him stay.

I actually feel a little sad about this.

Yeah Roy was my favorite player for awhile. My favorite Roy moment will always be the game against Philly where he made the last minute interception to win the game.

Very much a bittersweet moment, he has made me cringe over the past 2 seasons when he is on the field.

Its pretty much a straight forward football X's and O's scenario that he isn't suited for a 3-4 defense, we have beat that point to death.

I just wish he would have made some sort of transition, weight or something, or they would have game planned in a more efficient way to emphasize his strengths and minimize his weaknesses, or perhaps, he would restructure, but i feel like the inevitable time is here.

Ill never forget that Monday Night game against the Eagles where he picked McNabb and ran it back for a touchdown and the go-ahead score, that was pure jubilation

Goodbye Roy, to a lot of us you still mean quite a bit and will always be a Cowboy :suxjints::suxiggle::suxskins::suxskins::suxskins:

If they know he's gonna get released, why would any team trade for him?

It depends on the interest around the league for him. Finding that our is pretty easy. We'll see if any teams contacts him about restructuring his contract because even if there was " alot " of interest, I doubt any team would take on his contract. If no team calls him about that, then there's your answer. Now, if the word gets around that there are a few team interested, perhaps one of them would not want RW to hit the FA market and him having options.

Big IF, I know, but there's the reasoning.

If I'm a 4-3 team and have a open spot at SS, I'd be curious and give a late round pick for him.

Personally I'd like Roy to stay one more year. If he stays tho fans are gonna tear him up literally for every little tiny mistake he makes. His replacement is gonna get hammered also. so there aint a big difference whos back there. sumtimes for fans - they all suck. oh well.....

good luck ROY! - Ill have to bury my Roy WIlliams Jersey forever now. let the new era at the SS position begin....

I've said this all along, I know he was going to have something done, but I will be one of those few people who will be sad once he's gone. I'm just a Roy fan and I can't help it.

Same here. This stinks, really. I trust Wade's judgment on defensive players, but I hope Roy's love of the game wasn't somehow rejuvenated by sitting out all season and some other team reaps the benefits instead of us.

How many years have people desperately been waiting for Roy to be the player he was his first couple of years.

I'm not sure we'll ever know what started the decline, but he hasn't been good for awhile.

I like Roy he is a good dude, I just dont think he is the same player he was early in his career.

A big hitter who doesnt hit people any more and cant cover just isnt worth the money he was scheduled to make.

Good Luck Roy!

I'll never understand how the fans turned on Roy so quick. He was still making pro-bowls when people on the board were looking to kick him out of town. In my opinion, it's like being mad at your Doberman because he isn't a grey hound. He was never comfortable in the 3-4 and honestly we shouldn't have asked him to cover as much. It wasn't his strength. Put him close to the line and let him hit people. He'll catch on with another team (I think he'd be a great addition in Chicago) and show just how talented he really is. It's going to be weird seeing him in another uniform, but no matter where he goes I'll be his fan.

It was the Washington game. To get beat once, it happens. To get beat twice, in the fourth quarter, against the skins?

I still believe it was poor defensive calls by the DC, but RW was the man in the spotlight.

Still hoping he suits up for Dallas this season.

I'm ok with this. He's gotten pretty slow and would get beat deep to much.

I just don't get it.

I honestly don't believe I'm overstating when I say he was one of the best defensive players in all of football his first two seasons.

He had it all. He could and did cover people. And as far as hitting, he was the most intimidating guys I ever seen. Think back to how may players he hurt his first 2 years. And not just with the horse collar. I'd never seen anything like it.

Can't understand what happened to him. Just took a huge step down in year 3 and every year after.

thanks for the memories roy...

you used to be one of my favorite players.
