Anyone basing their opinion soley on those numbers is sorely mistaken.

Well, the take home lesson is what has been going around since draft talk got serious. There are is no golden child at WR in this draft. There isn't a single one worth a first. And Jackson. Excuse me. He'll do for us what Ginn did for the Fins. Zero. Using him as a comparison is ok if its an example of who not to draft in the first.

If we can get RW or another vet for our 28 then that is golden. A steal. Otherwise address this topic in round three at most 61.

:damn: Gosh, Limus, you were never an elite player in the NCAA. There were better WRs in the conference. Now you are at No. 4?
How'd that happen?

Pass on this serviceable wideout for the underachieving Longhorns. If you want a blue chipper, look no further than Chad or Roy who are available and can do the job.

The problem with Sweed and looking at his number to confirm his ability to play is that Texas was not able to really use Sweed in the best capacity last year or really, the year before. Some of you may read this post and dismiss it as Homer Speak but in truth, it really is an honest evaluation of the Texas offense and Sweed's role in that offense. If you study Sweed in 06 and 07, you will see that in 06, his numbers were far superior to those in 07. The reason for this was that the Texas Offense was much better in 06. The Texas offense in 06 was a dynamic offense with a strong running game and a deep threat passing game. Look at Colt McCoy's numbers and you will see this. In 06, McCoy had the second best Freshman season in the history of the NCAA but he still missed on a lot of opportunities with Sweed because he was a Freshman. He passed for a 68.2 Comp%, 8.8 YPA, a QBRT of 161.8, 29TDs against 7 INTs. This year, 65.1 Comp%, 7.79 YPA, 139.2 QBRT and 22TDs against 18 INTs. All this indicates that the Texas passing game was shortened considerably. It became much more of a dink and dunk offense as opposed to a deep threat offense.

Look at the production of the WRs in 06 as opposed to 07

Top 3 WRs in 06

Sweed 46 Rec. 801 Yds. 17.4 YPC, 12 TDs.
Cosby 45 Rec. 525 Yds. 11.7 YPC, 2 TDs.
Pittman 35 Rec. 456 Yds. 13.0 YPC, 4 TDs.

Total completions for 06 were 244.

In 07, here is what the numbers of these three looked like. Ave YPR for the team was 12.2

In 07, they looked like this.

Sweed 19 Rec. 306 Yds. 16.1 YPC, 3 TDs.
Cosby 60 Rec. 680 Yds. 11.3 YPC, 5 TDs.
Pittman 11 Rec. 77 Yds. 7.0 YPC, 0 TDs.

Jones, Cosby and Finley were the leading recievers in 07 with catch totals of 70, 60 and 45. was 11.4, 11.3 and 12.8.

TD catches over 25 yards were 8 in 07. Only 1 for 50 or more yards. In 06 Sweed alone had 9 Catches for over 25 with 3 of 50 or better.

It was just a different offense in 07 as opposed to 06. If you want to look at why, you have to look to the OL. Texas has lost a ton of OLs in 05 and 06.

Add in the fact that the OC has changed and this tells a lot of why Sweed's production has not been consistant. Injuries also play a role.

To me, Texas has never been very good at teaching players skills for the next level. In some areas, they are very good but in other's, not so good. WR is one of those areas. I think it's more then just Sweed is inconsitant or he's lazy. Anybody who has really watched Texas football knows that all I've said is true. I don't know how good Sweed can be but if you look at him when he's healthy, the guy catches TDs. He has an excellent AYPC number and he can stretch the field. I know that early in the year, Sweed was open a lot. The Texas OL just could not protect the QB long enough to connect. Sweed has talent. I don't know how good he can be but there is definatly talent there.

Neither of those players are available, they are both under contract to professional football teams.
