I'm not sure if the lack of determination was due to laziness or due to unfamiliarity of the position and his confidence waned.

The facts are that Bruce Carter did not play well in '13, but played well in '12.

If he sucked both seasons I would be done with him, but at this point he gets a "mulligan".

I say let me play for the cheap in 2014 and find his replacement soon afterwards....

Well that's pretty much what is happening in '14.

If this defense didn't have a crisis on the DL, you could see the team taking a shot at an early round LB, but at this juncture they have to keep their fingers crossed that Carter can play in '14 like he did in '12.

I just don't see anything special about him at this point. He took a big step back this year for whatever reason smh

As an inside linebacker in a 3-4 with far less mental responsibilities than in the Tampa 2 where the weakside linebacker is key to coverages.

That's why it may take more than one training camp for him to find his way at the position.

What else is new from Mr.Optimistic himself..

What if he's not? What's the backup plan Jer

Well, if we hit on Holloman and another LB in the draft, then, maybe Carter becomes the backup plan. We'll see. If Carter flames out, we just move on from him. We won't have any money tied into him.

I'm rooting for him. Last year though, quitting on plays, running around confused, was unacceptable. Actual coaching would be a start. Maybe Marinelli works with Carter (more) now that he the DC and not just D Line coach.

Thanks for the update COACH JONES:rolleyes:

It is astonishing how often he is commenting on player progress, how much they will play and their future prospects.

But I guess all owners and all GMs do this. We must just miss it.

Scouting knock was that he didn't lean on his instincts as a player sometimes at UNC.

2012 Bruce = Instincts Bruce. A joy to watch. This was year 2 in the Rob Ryan system.

2013 Bruce = Tentative Bruce. Not a joy to watch. Year 1 in the 4-3.

2014 Bruce = ???? Bruce. But I'd be willing to bet we get Instincts Bruce back and get to watch him fly around making plays all over.

Free was a similar situation. No one gave him a chance of rebounding in '13 and he did.

Does that mean Carter will? Nope. But I don't think you can be cavalier with a 2nd round pick... especially one that has played well in the past.

The thing that bothered me most was him filling the open gap and then turning his shoulder when he took on the fullback...it's sink or swim for him this year

Usually this kind of Jones vote of confidence precedes something disastrous happening to the player in question.
