From just the camp video, Gather's looks like a long way from being the player he can be. All the video on him actually, including sports science. He doesn't move like one and will take time to adjust to the physicality of football. For being as big he is I hope he tries to be more of a physical TE than a finesse WR as basketball seems to be going in the finesse direction.

However, in saying that I hope we give him a chance but it may take a roster spot to do that and I am not sure we will. If he isn't soemone will snatched him from our PS as his potential is off the charts. He's just going to need a lot of time to be that player we think he can be.

Former Cowboys vice president of player personnel Gil Brandt recently joined the Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw and Mosley on 103.3 FM ESPN Radio to discuss all things Cowboys. Here are some highlights.
On Dak Prescott:

Brandt: "Well let me say this to you and you're going to laugh when I tell you this. [Prescott] is a better football player than Tim Tebow. He's a better football player than Tim Tebow. You're going to laugh when I say that because Tebow was a first-round pick because he was on a very, very good team at Florida. But this guy is a better football player. He has some work to do because they played the Florida offense, which is not a passing offense we see in the NFL. But I think Prescott has a lot of upside, I liked him a lot and I told one of your fellow writers back in February I think it was this was the quarterback they were going to draft."

On Rico Gathers:

Brandt: "We had great success with basketball players. Ken Johnson was a guy we signed in 1971 and ironically played for coach Bob Knight at Indiana. We tried to make an offensive tackle out of him and we thought he was going to be pretty good. What happened is, when we got down to 46 or whatever it was in those days, we put him on waivers and Cincinnati claimed him. He played seven years for Cincinnati and 96 plus games and at one time over a period of three years led their team in sacks.

I think the Cowboys did a real good job getting Gathers. He a big guy and has a lot of room for development. He's I think 273 pounds now, has average hands. One of the things you can always do is you can make a guy's hands better but you can't make him taller and you can't make him faster, is what it amounts to. When you're drafting in the sixth round I think that this is a great place to pick someone like this."

On if making the transition from basketball to football will be difficult:

Brandt: "I think it will be a wake-up call the first day they hit somebody at training camp. But I think when you're down there in the sixth round and you have three sixth round picks you can't trade, because I think they were all the compensatory picks, I don't think you can go wrong because I guarantee you this the reason he announced was going to play football was because all of a sudden his wife announced one day she was pregnant for the second time so he thought he better get a job."
