The issue with putting him at TE is you need a high football IQ to play TE. You have to be able to diagnose the coverage while you are running your route and seamlessly run the route according to that coverage. For instance, you will have a play where if it's man coverage, the TE has to run a drag route and if it's zone, he has to sit down. Not always easy to recognize pre-snap and if you're running the route, you can't afford to even have a hint of a mis-step. Tough to see a guy with no real football experience doing this well. Of course, if you put him at DE, now you need a guy that needs to understand the hand techniques, the lateral bending and be interested in tackling.

To me, it's likely a wasted pick. Antonio Gates was an All-State football player in high school in Michigan. I'm amazed how many scouts fail to recognize this and just think that any former basketball player 'has a chance' because Gates was successful in the NFL.

YR

I generally don't have high hopes for any sixth round picks, but I'd argue that defensive concepts from basketball probably carry over fairly well as far as TE coverage goes. The blocking responsibilities are what I'd be worried about.

Either way, the coach that got Rico ready for the draft has ties to Linehan. I believe this pick was an inside scoop from somebody he trusted that this player could develop long term.

And they like to rest Witten in camp as it is. With Escobar sidelined, this guy has a shot at making the roster early if he can contribute. Given we had a need at TE3, I kind of like that they took a shot on a physical specimen.

With Rico's height and size, if he comes along and catches the ball well. I can see a lot of back of the end zone high throws for TD's. Tony just needs to toss it up, as if throwing it away...oh, Rico sky's up and.........TD Uncle Rico.....

Anyone comparing Dak to Tebow is being intellectually lazy.

Then why couldn't the NFL see that 1st Round Tebow was actually no more than 4th rounder and Presscott worth potentially a 1st.

Been saying forever and a Day, without as much of an inkling of conformation on this Forum, that 2016 was extremely deep in 2nd tier Qbs.

I really don't get the Tebow comparisons, I really don't. And that's not a knock against Tebow -- I loved watching him play in college. But in his college career, Tebow did little to refine his passing game; instead, he became the ultimate "dual-threat" guy, rushing for almost 1k yards.

Prescott, on the other hand, started as a dual-threat QB and became more of a passing QB, his mechanics and completion percentage increasing dramatically each year. Prescott threw for about 1,000 more yards his Senior year than Tebow.

Also, Tebow's biggest mechanical "knock" was a long wind-up, whereas Prescott has a very quick release.

Just not seeing the comparison.
