DMN: Gosselin: Cowboys need to run the ball, but will Scott Linehan actually do it?

Yep. My bad for listening to them. I was mistaken completely.

But once you factor out the runs by Qbs (as I'm pretty sure neither Romo, Orton, or Stafford had to many designed running plays) for both teams it's 408 to 315. Which, obviously, Detroit still ran the ball more. So hopefully Scott will run it more in Dallas.

I expect him to use the weapons we have including Murray. No illusions that Linehan will be some grind it out coach he is not he is going to throw the ball a lot I expect to see him move Dez around just as he did with Megatron to maximize the talent of Dez but fact is as Det brought in guys like Bush they used him.

They really do, come on goose make the statement that Det ran it less than Dallas? That is either a flat out lie or he did not bother to even check it, he is so interested in his own opinion he will not check facts. No doubt Linehan passed a lot in Det he had Megatron you better believe he used the best WR in the NFL but Det managed to run the ball quite a bit in the process

Also, Fraley said the Linehan did know what to do with Steven Jackson. Well, Jackson's career average for carries in a year is 17.8 and his average was 20.9 in the years with Linehan. Also, Jackson's peak carries in a year came in 2006 which was Linehan's first year as his OC.

I know. He used the weapons he had which these 2 idiots can't seem to figure out. They really need to get out of sports and report on something else like Entertainment section where facts do not get in the way.

Is that confusing? I think Jerry wanted him to offload the responsibility, and they thought Callahan was a decent option for that. Then Jason wasn't satisfied with the result and took the playcalling back at the end of the season. Pretty simple explanation.

Of course, that might not be how it went down. There are a half-dozen variations that would explain the juggling going on. We just don't have enough data to know for sure and can only guess re: what we think is most likely.

I'd like to hear the other 4 variations because the 2 you mention don't paint Coach Garrett in a very flattering light. Either it was his [bad] idea to let Callahan call the plays or it was Jerry's and Jason doesn't even have control over who runs his offense.

I may be obtuse, but it is particularities such as these that obscure my view of the Great Rebuild.

Who knows how it went down. There's no reason to be sure it went down in a way that was flattering to Garrett, either. Jerry's his boss, after all. Jason's not going to win any disagreements where Jerry puts his foot down. Nor is any other coach, though, which is one of the problems.

On a seasonal basis, this fan supports the philosophy of crawl, walk, and then run...and a hotel lobby qualifies for none of that.

Why did it have to be a bad idea? There are other reasons to make a change besides Callahan doing a poor job. Perhaps Romo didn't like the play calling. That is one of the better reasons I've seen for the change. Maybe Romo and Garrett. Of just Garrett thought after seeing the results for half a year he had a better idea. If you have a faulty part you change it. If you think you see a better way to increase production then you move in that direction. The fact Garrett isn't afraid to make changes is a good thing. That doesn't wipe out all the Aw ***** but it does end up on the credit side of the ledger.

I agree and ultimately Garrett is the HC if he does not like what he is seeing out of the offense or defense he is responsible to change that. I said from the get go when people hollered he was demoted and all this other crazy stuff that as a HC he can and will change things as he sees fit and that is what he did. His relationship with Linehan is a big reason why Linehan is here, I think Linehane will have a better understanding of what Jason wants and I think Jason will be much more trusting in what Linehan does. If this fails it is not on Linehan or Marinelli it is on the HC he is the one running things on the field, their success is his and their failures are his. it come with the job of Head Coach

To me, this is the building of just as dominant a group of coaches as Andy Reid had before all the glue came loose.

True. I have heard some say too many cooks in the kitchen? I think that is where it falls on the HC to let people know their roles and establish clear communication of what he wants and expects.

Gosselin stating the obvious, he didn't tell us anything. But it's his usual stuff. He should have stuck to his mock drafts and player evaluations coming out of college.
I have very little use for his ramblings.

Fraley, beat writer for the Rangers. So what does he know about how Linehan used Jackson. Maybe more tham us, maybe not, but I will not take his word for it. Easy for some one not following the Rams to say that.
Maybe the talent, or lack of around Jackson had something to do with that. Which is why he bolted to the Falcons, and the $$$ of course.

I'm of the mind Linehan may not utilize our running plays any more than we have in the past BUT he'll enable his RBs to catch the ball in the open field via the pass. With that, we'll put some elusive RBs to use with a well-known knack for open-field gains. I feel reasonably confident DeMarco Murray, Lance Dunbar, Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams won't mind too much if they're effective.

You left out the theory that they did call runs and Romo just audibles out of a large portion to passes based on the D formations that he sees which shifts the percentages towards passing. Perhaps D coordinators sense a lack of consistency in the passing game or simply do not fear it.

I think that is a great point that often gets overlooked. A very valid observation.

In order to make the opposition respect the run the Cowboys must gash them first,,, so there should be a decent amount of running when the season starts with, hopefully, tons of success. If that scenario plays out then Linehan can mix it up and go do the pass thing you know he wants to do

Yes, the threat of the run is more valuable than actually running for big yardage in that specific game.

When a defense comes into a game, they can load up on the run if they fear it and keep the rushing yardage contained; however, they will have weakened their pass defense in the process. The rushing threat might have significantly added to that win, but it might not show up in the stats.

I'm curious but...based on what?

I haven't ever known a team that he's been the play caller to be a running type of offense anything close to what the offense was like when Emmitt was here.

I'm a little skeptical of the hiring myself because he called the plays for one of the few teams that ran the ball less than we did. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried we've just got another play caller whose going to become obsessed with the passing game.

Forget about history and his actual resume.

Trust me. He's running it.

Now when I say Go, you say Cowboys!....

lol...i can understand this but the reality is that coach did call something like 90+ more run plays last year in Det than Dallas did. I'm skeptical cause he doesn't seem like a run type of offensive coordinator but after I looked at the numbers he did call more run plays than Dallas.

He likes to spread the field and he does like to pass but then when you have a Widout like Calvin Johnson you will look for ways to get him the ball. Det then went out and got Bush who had one of the best seasons in his career, Joique Bell got more chances last year than he ever had before in the running game.
