I agree with Carriker being overrated. But even more puzzling is that I have seen many people suggest that we draft him.

Why in the heck would even consider taking a 3/4 DE? That is by far our strongest, deepest, youngest position on the team, with Spears, Canty, Hatcher, Ratliff all with great promise.

I could see a "pass rushing" DE/OLB being considered, but unless there was a huge value in the later rounds like Canty, then I see no need whatsoever for a 295 LB DE. Unless he can put on 30lbs and play the nose.

While I think Carriker would be a very good DE in Wade Phillips 3-4, I'd rather not spend a first round pick on one.

If we want to get someone to compete at DE (and I wouldn't mind that because I'm not sold on Canty at all), I'd rather see us pick up a prospect later on in the draft.

In Phillips 3-4, the DE's apply much more pressure on the QB than what we've been seeing in Parcells 3-4. Wade has the DE's shoot the gap upfield as soon as the ball is snapped with only 1 gap resposibility, while Parcells had them hold and read with 2 gap resposibility. That makes for much more pressure and a player with a real good first step can really produce from that spot.

There are a few undersized college DT's (like Ratliff) who have great athleticism and first steps that could do very will in Wade's scheme. They could be had in later rounds.

One that I really like is Ryan McBean out of OK State.

goose is the most accurate draft forecaster in the business.

He's not really a "forecaster" any more than he just reports what he hears. He has even admitted as much.

Yep, he's just well connected and he picks the brains of all the scouts, etc. around the league and then spews it all back out in a mock like a day before the draft. Then, when he's very close he gets all these accolades for being so accurate.

Big deal. He's only saying what real NFL people are telling him.

Another guy I wouldn't mind us looking at in the middle rounds is:

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/dt/turkmcbride.html

Turk McBride. He has a super quick first step which would really work to his advantage in Wade Phillips scheme where the DE's are supposed to strike quick upfield at the snap.

To me, first step quickness and explosion are more important than 40 time for Phillips DE's.

I think that Ray McDonald would project well to Phillips DE position. He's a 4-3 tweener (too small for DT and too big and slow for an edge DE) but just about right for Wades 3-4.

I also think Kareem Brown might not be a bad project at DE in the later rounds, if he's there.

That's just a few of the mid round guys that I wouldn't mind seeing give Canty and Spears a little competition. DE in Wade's scheme is more of an impact position than it was in Bill's and I'd like to see an impact player there.

5. Josh Wilson Maryland 5-9 189

im kind of surprised he has this guy rated as the 5th best cb... im not going to lie.. i dont even know him.. and hes ranked ahead of wright hughes and mcauley

The only real knocks against him I can find are size. Sporting News says he "consistently made attention-grabbing plays in college and followed with a strong Senior Bowl week. He has athleticism, explosiveness and playmaking ability and will become a good NFL starter if he refines his backpedal."

Realistically there are probably only 2 tackles that are going to be really good; with maybe a third. After that- maybe some gem is unearthed, but right now If I were goose I would have listed only 3 tackles if listing 5 meant putting Harris in there.
