Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist E-mail News tips

Since he became a starting quarterback, Tony Romo has spoken to the media every Wednesday from 12-12:15 pm except on rare occassions.

This is common NFL procedure for star players. They pick a day - the same day throughout the season - and that's the day they talk, which means they only have to deal with the local media once a week.

Troy Aikman talked on Mondays. Emmitt Smith on Thursdays. Michael Irvin on Fridays.

Do you notice a trend?

Romo talked on Wednesday the first two games of this season. Then after a raggedy performance against the Giants he didn't talk until Friday.

Last week, he talked on Thursday. Since he didn't talk today, I assume that means he'll start talking on Thursdays.

As a columnist, I write my opinion. Sometimes, I use quotes; other times, I don't. A lot of times I'll just listen to players answer questions to get a vibe from the team.

So it really doesn't affect me or bother me when Romo doesn't talk, but it does make me wonder if he's feeling the pressure. It makes me wonder why he's varying his routine.

The first thing you learn as a beat reporter is that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes, the reason is important and sometimes it's significant.

The point: There's a reason Romo no longer talks on Wednesdays.

As a quarterback, you're the face of the franchise which is why you should talk.

Besides, it's easy to use the media to communicate with teammates as well as opponents. More important, Romo should use the media to talk to the fans.

Like I've said before I don't think Romo has the mental capacity to deal with the everyday pressures of the Dallas media and fans. Ducking the media isn't doing anything but validate to the critics that he's mentally soft.

what a joke. If Romo want's to communicate with his teammates it's easier to talk to them face to face. Why would Romo talk to his opponents through the media? Lastly I don't care what Romo has to say. the only thing I care about regarding him is what he does on the field.

JJT is a media bum.

To be totally honest I think it's BS that the league forces them to talk to the media at all. You shouldn't have to talk to them. If you want to that's great. If you don't want to then you shouldn't have to.

If it were me and I didn't have anything I wanted to talk to the media about I'd simply take the fine and go about my business.

Sorry folks, I mislabeled the thread title. I mixed the two thread titles he had on 'boys blog and his own JJT blog.

Carry on..

I understand the feeling but the networks many who hold interest in other media outlets do expect to have access to the players and they are the ones paying the bill as the network contract are worth over a billion dollars that they pay to the NFL so yes they expect access for what they pay for. I can see both sides of this issue.

maybe. but if romo doesn't want to talk and wants some room to think, that's his call and his right. give the media ammo?

hell, they take what they want and make up the rest anyway. "the little ball of hate" is likely the biggest turd-monger-writer we're stuck with here in dallas who if told to write an article w/o a cliche or calling someone names wouldn't be able to do it.

i've grown to really hate the media and the assumption the world is an open book to them just because.

Clearly understand that. I guess the best advice comes from the movie Bull Durham where Costner tells the pitcher to right down the things he needs to say when talking to the media, God willing we will go out and win this week. I have made some mistakes but really working hard to correct it. Thanks guys see you next Wed. :laugh2:

Based on my observation, Romo is doing a change up. He talks to the opposing teams media on Wed...and I think the local media on Friday.

Started the week after the Giants. Not sure if he did it that way last week, but it seems to make sense.

Some of you were celebrating when TO was giving Werder a hard time last year, now all of a sudden not speaking to the media means your mentally soft. Wonder what direction the opinion breeze will blow next week.
