Laufenberg: Think Greg Hardy's a problem now? Consider this scenario

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy (76) on the bench before a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Sunday, November 15, 2015. Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 10-6. (Vernon Bryant/The Dallas Morning News)

Babe Laufenberg, Dallas Cowboys radio color analyst and former NFL quarterback, answered questions about the team in a chat Wednesday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Mincey says Hardy-DeMarco Lawrence spat no big deal. But Hardy seems to argue with teammates all the time? Is that really no big deal?

Babe Laufenberg: I think in that instance, it truly was no big deal. Problem is, it comes on the heels of the game day confrontation with the special teams coach in NY and missing meetings. But yeah, this one a minor blip on the radar screen if taken as an isolated incident.

Question: Babe, I think it is a given that Greg Hardy won't be a Cowboy next season. With that being said, the Cowboys can save $5 million this season if they cut him before Sunday's game with the Dolphins. So let me ask you, do they roll the dice with him the rest of the season to try and make a late push or do they cut bait now?

Babe Laufenberg: Ha! They rolled the dice with Hardy the minute they signed him. Don't see that happening, as this team is still hoping to make a playoff push, as improbable as that sounds when they are sitting here at 2-7. But here is the bottom line, this is a player who knows that all eyes are on him, who is hoping to get a long-term contract, yet there has been a nearly weekly proclamation of, "We addressed it with Greg and are moving forward." So if you are going by the assumption (and I am) that he is "on his best behavior" what happens when he has real job security?

I don't see how anyone could believe Jerry and Stephen want Hardy back next season. Randy Gregory should be the projected starter at RE in 2016.

I think we are in that gray area now. I think a few weeks ago, they wanted him back for sure. I think after his recent "issues" they've taken the approach that they are going to wait and see now how he performs on and off the field the rest of the year. A few more sideline spats, or late/missed meetings or practices and I think they'll just deem him not worth the headache and move on.

The dude is emotional, but who cares? He's getting killed in the media because of "the incident" and because, even Dallas at 2-7, gets more media attention and cover stories than any other team in the NFL.

Most teams in the NFL could set records during a game, have a huge upset, but they'd still get upstaged by a tweet from Dez' pet monkey.

Let's see how he plays the rest of the year now that Romo is back and teams actually have to force the issue.

I didn't want this guy on the team from day one and can't wait until he's off the team, he's a cancer and a bad influence on the young players on the defensive line and Jerry doesn't help things by proclaiming to the media that Hardy's a leader in the locker room....so we have a degenerate in Hardy and an enabler in Jerry, that's a bad combination!

Excellent job tabloid propaganda media in creating the fake image such that people see it as "all the time".

Do you think Jerry is swayed by the media?

Because a few weeks ago he was saying he definitely wanted Hardy back and then just this week, he's basically backed off that stance.

What that tells me is that this isn't a media creation........... Hardy has done things that have given the front office suddenly a reason to pause.

Other than the fact they have come out and said they want to give him long term deal since day one, I suppose your right.

Other than the fact that just two days ago Jones essentially walked back that commentary from earlier this year saying Hardy now has essentially meet organizational expectations in order to get an extension.

Basically, he keeps screwing up, even on things people think are minor like sideline pissing matches and missing/late for team functions, they won't sign him most likely.

Pretty sure just mentioning the Cowboys and Greg Hardy elicits a Pavlonian response in the "media".

They just drool all over themselves and their handheld devices, trying their darndest to be the first to break the latest scoop from their "sources" that Greg took a dump and didn't spray air freshener afterwards.

Exactly. The media isn't what has changed Jerry and Stephen Jones' public stance on Greg Hardy. I think the number of issues - however small some might choose to believe - have started to add up. For a guy who should be humble, grateful, and on some level, remorseful, he's doing little to change his ways or putting in any effort to alter the perceptions of him.

I believe that was the plan, but Gregory hasn't shown he can be the guy at all. Injured or not he is still a question mark. I was hoping he would play so well to this point that Hardy would be expendable. Maybe/hopefully he goes off down the stretch which will help make that decision.

I think he will test the marked after the season. Somebody will pay him.

Wait it out and see how the season goes. Chances are, come FA time, he will still be out there.
If he performs great and no more incidences, missing meetings, or what ever people seem to think is not good. to some that is a fart, to others, a stupid tweet or quote. To others, actually breaking the law or team / NFL policies.
regardless.
It will depend on his play and locker room / team demeanor / attitude.
also will depend a lot upon the performance of Gregory and Lawrence. If they play like they are capable of, and to their potential, or seeing signs of it. Then this can make Hardy's return a mute point, possibly.

Or, if we continue to lose, get a top 5 draft pick, is there a chance to get Joey Bosa in the draft to replace Hardy.

He will NOT be back, folks, unless his offers are so few and low in cost that Dallas could get him for a song loaded with contingencies.

Look at how many issues there have been for the organization to deal with already, and he's just on a game-to-game deal right now. The guy can't lay low for a few weeks until the big payday gets here.

Just imagine if he had the security of a long-term deal. He'd be out of control.

Do they get a pick, if he signs somewhere else next year?
