Just got off the phone with Calvin "Lucky" Watkins, who wanted to pass along some info about the Cowboys' search for assistant coaches.

Word is that former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron, who discussed the D-line opening with Wade Phillips and Brian Stewart yesterday, is leaning toward taking an offer from the Saints.

Ex-Cowboy DB Dennis Thurman's name has surfaced as a potential replacement for Todd Bowles as secondary coach. He spent the last six seasons coaching the secondary in Baltimore.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome said that Thurman is still under contract. However, Thurman could become available if new Baltimore coach John Harbaugh decides to bring in one of his own guys.

Cowboys have some hires to make
January 23, 2008 10:57 AM

As we expected, new Dolphins coach Tony Sparano hired three Cowboys defensive coaches Tuesday. Todd Bowles will serve as the Cowfins' assistant head coach-secondary, Paul Pasqualoni takes over as defensive coordinator and Kacy Rodgers will coach the defensive line.

"Tony and I have worked together for five years," said Rodgers, "and it was hard for me to tell him no. I loved working for Wade Phillips, but Bill [Parcells] brought me into this league, and I'm excited about working with him again."
I'm told that Cowboys coach Wade Phillips wants to hire Emmitt Thomas as his secondary coach. Thomas, the former Chiefs great, has coached the defensive backs in Atlanta for six consecutive seasons and was named interim head coach when Bobby Petrino fled to Arkansas. Thomas has served as a defensive coordinator in Philadelphia, Green Bay and Minnesota. He and Phillips worked together in Atlanta.

Chargers outside linebackers coach John Pagano is a leading candidate to replace Pasqualoni. He's been with San Diego since 2002 and he's also worked under Phillips.

One other nugget that will interest Cowboys fans: I've been told by two different sources that Phillips wanted to hire former Chiefs offensive coordinator Mike Solari to coach the offensive line, but was trumped by owner Jerry Jones, who opted for Hudson Houck

Coaching search

One coaching candidate for the Cowboys was believed to be former Baltimore Ravens secondary coach Dennis Thurman. The Cowboys are looking to replace secondary coach Todd Bowles, who is now in Miami. Thurman played for the Cowboys froms 1978-85 and was the heart of a secondary nicknamed ``Thurman's Thieves.''

But has yet to hear from the Cowboys and they have been in the same town in Mobile, Ala. Thurman would love to return to Dallas but is losing hope that it would be a possibility.

Cowboys staff on the move

Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones have left the Senior Bowl and are flying back to Dallas to prepare to interview candidates for their assistant jobs.

Head coach Wade Phillips and the rest of the Cowboys staff will leave later tonight.

Which explains why we haven't contacted him yet. He would be a nice fit if he is released.

With Garrett walking away from them, I doubt they will let him go to come to Dallas. They are well aware of his abilities, Harbaugh would have to insist he didn't want Dennis.

I would have been happy either way.

If that's true then Jerry hasn't learned anything.

As if you owned a business you'd never make any business decisions.

It's his freakin' team, he can do what the hell he wants with it. What's the "learned" got to do with anything?

Was Houck a bad hire? NO.

To be fair, we wont know if Houck is a good/bad hire until next season...

History suggests it was a very good hire....but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

And the same would apply if Solari had been hired vs Houck. I think both were good candidates and that you couldn't go wrong with either guy.

While both are good choices, I'm happy Jerry thrumped Wade. Wade, no matter how good his defense is/can be. The guy is part dumb-dumb.

I won't be sad at all if we land Emmitt Thomas. Despite my Thuman's Thieves thread.

I'd have loved Solari here.

Pagano is a great idea. Wade tried to get him last year.

I wish Dom Capers would come be the DL-Assistant HC. Probably not likely, but I can dream.

While this is true, Jerry without question made the most logical choice. Houck is the best in the business and his production level stands like the Eiffel Tower among the rest of the options.

With the talk of Houck possibly retiring, I wonder how long he will be with us. If Mike Solari might have stayed longer he might have been a better addition.

He never said he wanted to retire. That story is like the herpes of the off season - it's never going away.
