Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips looks on, as the Cowboys fall behind again during first half NFL football action between the Dallas Cowboys and the Jacksonville Jaguars at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on October 31, 2010. Still, Jacksonville won 35-17.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Two people with knowledge of the agreement say Wade Phillips is returning to Denver as Gary Kubiak’s defensive coordinator.

The two spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t immediately announce the hiring, which was first reported by KDCO-AM and FM Mile High Sports Radio in Denver.

Phillips, 67, interviewed for the position Tuesday.

He was Kubiak’s defensive coordinator in Houston from 2011-13 and replaced him as interim coach when Kubiak was fired by the Texans in December 2013.

Phillips has also coached the Saints, Cowboys, Bills and Broncos, where he went 16-16 from 1993-94.

He was out of football last season for the first time since 1975.

I like the guy. I hope he does well. I fully expect a better defense for the next two years then the wheels to fall off.

I can't help but wonder why the title doesn't say former Broncos Head Coach instead of former Cowboys Head Coach?

Oh yeah, one is sexy, the other not so much.
It's also a Dallas paper. That he's a former Cowboys coach is the only reason they're reporting on it. If it were ESPN, yeah that'd be weird.

Looks like Denver is getting the band back together.
All they need now is Shanny as O Coordinator and wouldn't that be interesting? Ex HC to OC, Ex OC to HC and EX HC to DC. Looks like a calculus problem to test a new theory of relativity. :muttley:
Will be fun to hear the Denver sports radio stations on the way home.

The story is posted on the DMN alright. There are literally thousands of photographs of Wade Phillips. For example, I am certain there were many to chose from the 13-3 2007 regular season, perhaps showing Phillips standing confidently on the sidelines or even looking like a jovial Mr. StayPuff Marshmillow Man during a great season. But no. What type of photo was tabbed for the article? Why, it's an image from one of the six losses during the 1-7 collapse in 2010!

Typical.

Normally he does a great job then gets promoted to HC, then the wheels fall off.

Dooms, when you are right you are right.
And his fan club will say, they say: He was a defensive guru in San Diego. Well, Dave Wannstadt was a defensive guru in Dallas but that dont mean he succeeded anywhere else.
Interesting how this retread keeps getting chances when there are so many better and younger coaches out there. Hail, there are 10 in the metroplex (in high school and college) who could do a better job.

Retreads as HC I agree as a DC Wade still has much to offer. I seriously doubt he gets another shot at HC but I see him being a top DC in this league

Could it be that he is not a threat to the HC. Defensively still probably one of the better minds out there but he needs a HC with discipline to off set his cupcake coaching.

He doesn't need the money..I bet he had plenty on his own plus Bum's inheritance.

He just likes to coach!
