Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips looks on, as the Cowboys fall behind again during first half NFL football action between the Dallas Cowboys and the Jacksonville Jaguars at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on October 31, 2010. Still, Jacksonville won 35-17.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Two people with knowledge of the agreement say Wade Phillips is returning to Denver as Gary Kubiak’s defensive coordinator.

The two spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t immediately announce the hiring, which was first reported by KDCO-AM and FM Mile High Sports Radio in Denver.

Phillips, 67, interviewed for the position Tuesday.

He was Kubiak’s defensive coordinator in Houston from 2011-13 and replaced him as interim coach when Kubiak was fired by the Texans in December 2013.

Phillips has also coached the Saints, Cowboys, Bills and Broncos, where he went 16-16 from 1993-94.

He was out of football last season for the first time since 1975.

Broncos going "Retread City".

I'm not saying I know how it's all gonna go down for Denver, but first impression has me thinking that their arrow will be trending down sooner than later with Kubiak and Son of Bum.

Looks like Denver is getting the band back together.
All they need now is Shanny as O Coordinator and wouldn't that be interesting? Ex HC to OC, Ex OC to HC and EX HC to DC. Looks like a calculus problem to test a new theory of relativity. :muttley:
Will be fun to hear the Denver sports radio stations on the way home.

Kubiak was OC, I believe, under Shanny...

Could it be that he is not a threat to the HC. Defensively still probably one of the better minds out there but he needs a HC with discipline to off set his cupcake coaching.

He inherited teams mid-season which sucked and added to his loss totals. He had Buffalo and had them playing ridiculous defense and lost because of the Music City Miracle and they had no QB and they had a very interfering owner. Denver, he was OK, same thing taking over for Dan Reeves. At Dallas, he had Garrett put on him. Still won the division and the NFC East.

That was Parcell's team just like Switzers one super bowl was more product of Jimmy Johnson than anything he did.

Wade won the a play-off game 3 years later. At what your do you give him credit?

Parcell's defense the year prior before Wade was pretty awful. The NO game, they couldn't stop a basic screen to save their lives. Wade was essentially the stop-gap, which Jerry got after Parcells switched to a 3-4. He left Wade with a bunch of scrubs at CB and LB, guys that couldn't cover at all. Remember Ayodele and Bradie James in pass coverage. Jacques Reeves and Anthony Henry as CB and Roy Williams in coverage as well. Wade did pretty good with that mess.

The major suckage at CB is probably what left Jerry with the lingering taste to finally go out and spend money on guys like Carr and Claiborne.

The main point though is, again, Wade never has really been given a fair shake when it comes to laying his own foundation. But he hasn't been a bad coach as some people continually parrot and he's definitely not fair to compare him so much to Norv, who himself has had multiple years at places like SD to lay his own foundation as a HC.

Wade should do well with Ware and Miller coming off the edges in a 3-4

How much time should he get, 3, 5, 7 years. Every where he goes his teams end up about middle of the road. I think he is a great defensive mind but he does not have the chops to be HC, he just does not have that bad guy gene in him. There is nothing wrong with that I think every HC must have that one line in the sand the players can't cross but wade has no line.

Again, context. Two playoff births and first playoff win in 17 years isn't shabby here. I just don't think organization cations find him sexy, that's why they don't have him as a coach. Dan Reeves called him one of the best personnel men he worked with.

If Garrett had been named head coach in 2007 Dallas would have still made the playoffs that season. Wade did nothing special as head coach while with the Cowboys. He is a good DC. Well, maybe. The Texans wasn't playing great defense his last season in Houston.

False. They had a QB that was playing great football in the regular season(Doug Flutie). Flutie was rested for the regular season finale and Johnson played. Rob Johnson had the best day of his career on that day and Wade bought into the fool's gold. He started Johnson the next week in Tennessee and lost in the "Music City Miracle". Flutie would have sliced and diced that team and it never would have come down to a Special teams gaffe had Wade been smart enough to start the QB that got him there to start with. It's stupid decisions like that that keep Wade from being anything more than a decent interim Head Coach.
