Sherrington: Weeden would be adequate back-up for Romo; Tebow and Cowboys don't mix

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden (3) passes the ball to Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson (33) as Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Victor Butler (57) pressures Weeden during the first half of play at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Sunday, November 18, 2012.

SportsDayDFW.com columnist Kevin Sherrington hosted a chat Wednesday to talk all things sports. Here are some of the highlights:

Question: I would like your opinion of Brandon Weeden. Could he be counted on if Romo were injured? I think he could be with this offense around him.

Sherrington: I think he would be an adequate back-up. But let's face it: Any time you get down to your back-up QB, you're in trouble. There are only a handful of stories in the history of the league — Earl Morrall, for example, who died last month — of back-ups coming in and leading the team deep into the playoffs. That's why the Cowboys are willing to roll the dice with Romo and why they haven't developed QBs. It's not a good excuse, but it's part of the reason.

I would give any/every UDFA a chance to take the 3 or even replace Weeden. We have seen Weeden's body of work; he is what is @ this point (mistake prone/no pocket awareness). I would scour the last cuts in FA took look for an upgrade if possible.

He has a lot to improve on. I get a lot of Cleveland games around here and I saw him a few times last year and he was awful.

And that was in Norv's QB friendly offense. Linehan will probably make his head explode.

I'll wait to see how he does in TC before I judge anything.
I think [hope] he will be better than many think he will be. Could be why they also signed Haynie.
Weeden insurance for Orton, Haynie insurance for Weeden.

I think he'd be fine, too. And he makes way less money than Orton. He could get you through a game or three and keep the season afloat.

Let's face it, if Tony is out for longer than that, we're done anyway.

Yeah this, how many backup qbs would you take over Weeden, not many.

I think with Linehan, if Romo went done we'd be able to manage without the stellar QB play. We'd just have to use our RBs a lot more, especially out of the backfield as a pass catcher. And that's something that Linehan likes to incorporate into his offense, at least he did it last year in Detroit. Reggie Bush had 80 targets (54 catches/9.4 avg) last year, and Joique Bell had 68 targets (53 catches/10.3 avg). Meanwhile Murray had 66 Targets (53 catches/6.6 avg) and Joseph Randle had 10 targets (8 catches/7.6 avg).

I'm really excited about what Murray is going to do this year, I bet he has an 80 catch season with 1300 rushing yards. And y'all can quote me on that, because I think I'm being generous with those numbers. :D

If Romo goes done, all Weeden has to do is be able to hit Murray out the backfield. If he can't do that, then we're gonna some problems!

He's a fine backup. Don't know what people expect from a backup QB, even the mighty Kyle Orton pissed away the Eagles game. If Romo goes down, we're in for a world of trouble regardless.

I really believe Weeden isn't finished in terms of his development as yet. Cleveland isn't the ideal venue for any QB to develop his skills in. If Orton ultimately decides to return to Dallas, it'll afford Weeden more needed time to learn and improve. If not, he'll be forced to do his best with the limited amount of knowhow and experience he'll have had with them. It'd surely be hard for him.

Weeden had some nice weapons in Cleveland but nothing like what he would have in Dallas if he had to come in. He would have better protection and I think he can be the typical back-up, nothing special but just average.

I don't see why he wouldn't be fine. When your franchise QB goes down, the point of the backup is mainly to fill and and get the team out in one piece.

It was perfectly fine for Rivers. He was very successful in it. Things may have got stale, but it was a helpful system for him and his career.

Rivers was much better in mike mccoy's system. Better completion percentage, better TD to INT ratio, and threw for almost 1,000 more yards and the most TD passes he's thrown since 2008 with McCoy as his OC. Defenses have figured norv out over the years. That's why teams are going with younger more innovative OC's.
