DMN: Sherrington: Weeden would be adequate back-up for Romo

I really believe Weeden isn't finished in terms of his development as yet. Cleveland isn't the ideal venue for any QB to develop his skills in. If Orton ultimately decides to return to Dallas, it'll afford Weeden more needed time to learn and improve. If not, he'll be forced to do his best with the limited amount of knowhow and experience he'll have had with them. It'd surely be hard for him.

You do kind of wonder if fans would react the same to, say, Brady Quinn if we'd picked him up right after he bombed in CLE. For some reason, they don't like Weeden.

Yeah this, how many backup qbs would you take over Weeden, not many.

I think there are several I would take over Weeden. And a few that are inexperienced and completely unproven that I would at least take chance with over Weeden. Are there many that are easily available to acquire? No, there are some limitations on who Dallas could have picked up.

I'm of the opinion that Dallas as well as most teams would be in trouble if they lost their starting QB. Especially teams that rely on their QB so much. Dallas is one of those teams. Romo does a lot for Dallas. Most of the very good QBs do for their respective teams. It is always going to be a step down when you go to a backup QB. I have no confidence in Weeden and I would have little confidence in few back up QBs.

I would have hated bringing in Brady Quinn at any time.

Have these people actually seen Weeden play?

He's my kind of long-term backup. He'd lose every game.

I have no expectations for him, one way or another. He looked pretty good against us. That's all I've see of him as a pro. Interested in seeing him in preseason though.

Is weeden bad, yes, so far in his career. He was a 1st rounder under Cleveland's old regime and not barely a 1st rounder. Cleveland last year traded away their running game. Dallas is his second team he has only been in the league 2 years and has a decent amount of starts under his belt on a dysfunctional team. I do not believe he will be better or worse overall than Orton. I think he is more a WCO QB, I believe he has better pocket presence than some give him credit for because I actually believe he tried to do too much in cleveland which caused his problems to spiral.

A backup QB is for 2-4 Games a year, otherwise you're toast. Though Brandon is a fine backup QB.

Weeden = Orton for 2-4 weeks which makes Kyle expendable...that and 6 mil. make him very expendable.

Unless he has some flaw in his motion or slow feet and a week arm it's hard to think his best days are behind him and spending last year in Turners offense should add some value.

Admittedly, I have some doubt as to whether he'll ever develop into a bonified starter, even in due time. I do think he could prove himself to be a decent backup, though, in an offense where he's not required to be their savior. After all, Cleveland is well known to be a venue where most QBs would be seriously challenged, especially a relatively inexperienced one.

I will never think that Weeden is "the answer" or tony's eventual replacement...but a serviceable back-up? you bet...the guy obviously has athletic ability (playing baseball AND football at a high level)....I am a little tired of the Orton show, so either get on board or get out; but at this point, I may actually prefer weeden to back up tony....once he gets reps in practice (and he should get plenty with the first unit as tony heals), we will see what he has...there is also the "Cleveland sucks" thought process which, to me, gives Weeden an extra chance to prove himself

If Weeden could play against our defense every week, he'd be an all-star, just like he was when we played against him.

I'm confused. What does Tebow have to do with anything? His name is in the title.
