They are reporting that 5th year option will cost 8.8m but that seems awfully high.

Since TFred was taken in the second half of Round 1 his option is supposed to to be the average of 3-25 at his position. The third highest OC makes 8.9m and the 25th makes 1.4m.

The only thing I can think of is that they rate all OL positions on the same scale and not by position. If that is the case the number 3 OL makes 12.2m and the 25th makes 7.7m. That would make 8.9m right for a LT but high for an OC.

They have but its not like they have turned around the careers of a bunch of rejects and late round picks like Jimmy did. They built the OL on the back of four blue chip prospects. I credit them for being patient and putting an emphasis on the position but that's it.

Wasn't The draft longer? We hit in UDFA which is like hitting on round 8-12

I hope you're not crediting the front office for hitting on UDFA by acquiring La'el Collins. Collins is essentially a first round pick by draft grade.

In a way, of course there were less teams back then so fewer selections in each round almost equalize that out.

Of course I credit them, why is he in Dallas and not one of 31 other places?

That is a good job of recruiting which has always been a strength of Jerry Jones. Not a good job of finding talent or scouting a player, nobody questioned his talent. The point of my post is to say they built the line with 4 blue chip starts.

I just watched the NFL Network special "The Great Wall of Dallas" the other day so that is fresh on my mind. That line was built with good coaching and excellent scouting, not just blue chip prospects. It really makes the way we built our OL look silly. I'm not taking anything away from our line, I'm just not giving credit to our FO for "finding them" when they spent first round picks on them all (except Collins who had a first round grade and fell due to a misunderstanding).

No I am one of the more optimistic fans here if you read my posts. I am just calling it like it is...if you spend 3 first round picks and luck out at adding a fourth round pick talent on the same position, that position better be a strength on the team.

How long before this becomes a lets draft Elliott thread?

lol. I wouldnt be upset. With the pick or this thread turning.......:) I really want a QB, but only if they "really" like the guy. If they cant get their guy, go with a long shot in the later rounds......and pick up EE baby!!!! Run that guy and Morris all year long......keep Romo away from the bad guys/plays as much as possible.

Travis has to stay. And I didnt mind the pick, but thought , well if we couldve got him later, wouldnt of that been smarter?? But since that draft , I think its well known, Fredbeard wouldve most likely been gone. We wouldve lost him....... Good pick.

It's not so obvious, they could have opted to resign him early instead, and they still might. There's no reason to leak this early unless you're just trying to make a point - We like you a lot, even if we aren't ready to start talking extension just yet.

What was silly was spending 15 years trying to build a dominant line out of scraps, what was accomplished in the 90s is not easily replicated. It's like some some posters here who think building a dominant secondary is simple as finding multiple all pro players in the 5th round. If you want a unit to be good then you invest in it- look at how successful noted Supergenius Pete Carrol has been at building his OL the same way he did his secondary.

I don't disagree at all. I am happy they made the investment, it would just be nice if they could find some talented, franchise caliber players at other points in the draft besides just round 1. I know round one is where you typically find your best players but a lot of the better teams can find a player here and there all throughout the draft to become a great player.

Is Collins the only UDFA we have hit on? No, so go do some research.......or you can continue your hate on everything the front office does......goodbye now

They give out more comp picks now though. My point is our front office his more on UDFA then any other team.

Don't know why is so hard for people to say when the team does something good, it's always bad

This is a conversation about the OL, not any other position on the team. The team is excellent at landing some good quality UDFA but La'el Collins is not a "find", he is a gift.

I am simply stating the FACT that the FO should not receive credit for building an OL with essentially essentially four first round picks. If I spend four first round picks on any position, it better be great. I can maybe give them credit for Frederick since most did not see him worthy of being drafted that high. I credit them with being patient and building the position, not so much for talent evaluation. Most every team knew Collins, Smith and Martin were going to be studs.

Geez...I am one of the more optimistic fans on here and have been called out on it before but I discredit the FO on one minor detail and the hounds are released on me? Wow, now I know how some other posters must feel.
