The man on the other end of the line takes a deep breath.

“Golly, man!” Terry Gray exclaims. “There’s a feature story on him every day.”

The last comment is an exaggeration, but a grain of truth lurks beneath its surface. Gray has just been asked to talk about his old friend Will McClay, the Cowboys’ assistant director of player personnel who has recently ascended to one of the top positions in the organization.

If this guy is really that good it's a shame he can't be the GM for this team.

I don't know how good he is but it seems some think so. My guess he's more of a GM than Jerry lets on. If he is that good I hope they are grooming him for the job. If he really is that good then eventually someone will hire him as GM or asst GM somewhere. I wonder if Jerry is having to throw money at him already.

Cmon, jobber. We both know McClay isn't being groomed for the GM job here.

You are exactly right that if he really is this good, and remember all the fluff Tom Ciskowski articles we've seen in recent years so maybe he isn't, he will eventually have to leave here as there is no further opportunity for him in Dallas. He can't get to the top. Those seats are reserved for the Owner and his son.

I actually like the system that we have. Just don't like that he ultimate word still lies with Jerry. We can make a lot of right moves because of the system in place, but it takes only one big "direction" move from Jerry to undo or undermine progress.

Let's just hope he can continue to delegate, and pray that no seductive bad opportunities present themselves to Jerry.

Probably. Stephen may hire a 'real' GM someday.

This is a double-edged sword.

A) he does a good job, he does not become the GM (as Jones wouldn't allow it)
b) he does a GREAT job with the draft and he gets pilfered by some other owner to become their GM (as Jones wouldn't allow it here)

moral of the story: his days in dallas are numbered (unfortunate)

To me it would be a waste to be a Serious Waste to put him in that Role. He's perfect at why he is Now or a director of football research. I'm sure he will eventually Want that type of role Personally & will get it. Right Now he's building this team from the Ground Floor.

A GM builds the team from the ground floor. An assistant director of personnel does the grunt work to provide the GM the info he needs to make decisions.

If McClay is really that good it'd be nice if he was the GM. So he had decision making power, not only with draft picks but the staff underneath him. I don't know how any rational Cowboys fan could disagree with that.

Never underestimate the power of money. "Respect"= gettin' paid, especially in the sports world. Of all the flaws that Jerrah has, being cheap isn't one of them and he will pay through the nose to keep McClay as long as it makes him look good.

I have the Feeling he's Already proven He's as good as advertised. He brought us Laurent Robinson, Tony Fiammetta, Ernie Sims, George Selvie. All guys who came in from other teams or off the street & produced better than what we had. The Key the that is these guys are being picked from other teams "trash piles".

Agreed & a "title" won't let a smart man stand in the way of more salary. McClay is a smart Man.

I disagree. I feel the GM is responsible for the teams fiscal abilities first & foremost. Making Trades is # 2 on that list. Anything after that comes from a guy like McShay or similar in capacity.

No GM does the grunt work or pouring through hours upon hours of film. They may decide what to do fiscally with a player. Anything else you may hear is BS and we are Told for various reasons.

There's no way I will every believe Jerry, or Stephen for that matter, sits in the draft room and picks a player based upon their own work. It's based upon what the consensus opinion is between scouting departments, coaches, etc. McClay is now the ultimate opinion of those groups combined. He in effect is the guy who says "Jerry, Stephen this is the best pick/player/move for the Dallas Cowboys".

He is the reason we have Frederick & Terrance vs just Floyd and a year long pouting match that would ensue. Between various personalities.

As in managing the cap or are you referring to something more?

Both really lol. It's not just a "managing the cap" situation as much as it is overseeing the process & determining who is put in place to do certain aspects of that job.
