Do not challenge pass interference calls

If Bill O'Brien's challenge on the pass interference call was not overturned, none of them will be. That ball was 10 yards beyond a receiver running a comeback route.

Every route can be called pass interference, usually on both the defender and the receiver. It's going to be virtually impossible to reverse any of them.

This was a painfully STUPID rule change.

Garrett needs to keep his flag in his pocket on those all season.

This is a bad rule and will do major damage to the game of football.

well I would, why they could get it right next time..

heres why, on a challenge they are allowed to look at the entire picture and call other infractions.. it was at the very least illegal contact or holding..it was flag PI on th 1yard line it was not but ball in air you can NOT make that kind of contact..period...the flag was correct the call was not..

not stupid seen them get it correct and for sure at acritical moment a call or non call will help a team in challenge..its why it was implemented..whats stupid is the rams get free pass to the SB on their resume when we get robbed to see Brady vs Brees matchup..the kinks will get worked out..

so fari lie what ive seen from it
The Saints were beneficiaries of bad calls too.

People need to stop thinking a game comes down to a handful of plays at the end, or just the last few minutes.

The entirety is what matters.

Can we just follow college rules for review, 1 per half but the booth can review plays as well throughout the game.

But they had to do something after the New Orleans debacle. Easiest thing for them to do now is overturn none of them until coaches get the message and don't challenge anymore. Then the game goes on as before. And then next year they remove the rule "because after a while people didn't challenge PI calls anyway".

Besides not screwing up the call in the first place, I don't know how they can avoid the obscenity against the Saints again. And it's not like such glaring incompetence can only occur on a PI.

You'd like the league to monitor the game and say "Ok, that's just BS and we have to step in." But that will crash and burn someday too.

I'd have the make it take it rule. You get a finite number of *failed* challenges. Successful challenges don't count against you.

In college, how is booth review decided? If college has a system that seems to work, fine. Use that.

Ball was uncatchable because the WR ran the wrong route. Wasn't PI. DHolding could've been called initially, but only PI was challenged.

This has nothing to do w the games being fixed
IDK, man, that was just too blatant. There's no way the ref missed that call, he ignored it. Something stinks badly.

At first I thought it should be overturned. Watching the replay I couldn't tell if the receiver was forced of his route, making it uncatchable. A case could be made either way on that play.
Receiver broke off the route. He ran a comeback, QB threw to the back of the end zone.

This thread doesn’t make any sense. This was put in place because of an egregious PI missed call that would have been reversed upon review 100 out of 100 times.

Every single incomplete pass, fumble, interception, foot out of bounds, knee down/not down can be reviewed, and they have been upheld on countless occasions over the years due to wasted challenges. This is no different. Why not remove all those things too? Because this is new and uncomfortable to you?

This rule should have been added years ago. Ticky Tack (And often WRONG) PI calls are the most annoying thing in the game right now because they can seriously alter momentum, and in some cases decide the outcome.

I’d rather a ref decide the outcome of a game by correcting a mistake judicially than letting a mistake stand because people don't like changes.
Well said.

I am sick of the refs determining the outcome. And they have many many times.

The only thing that should be allowed when video replay is used is to check for pass interference. I do not think they need to check if the ball is catchable...even the analyst (Moose I think) said the call would not be overturned. As far as I'm concerned scrap the replay and get the game played in less than 6 hours...lol

Have they overturned a PI challenge yet?

Same way the NFL's works in the final two minutes of each half. It works fine, let's just copy it

There was a play over the weekend that was overturned and called pass interference upon review. The problem is, it looked more like offensive pass interference yet they ruled it on the defense.

I think what you will see more of isn't the challenge of a call but rather a non-call.

that call was THE call that changed the game period..theres ebs and flows and that would have possibly been catch and TD. they were desperate, its the moment in the game when it happens that actually gives you an idea of how egregious it was..

sorry you wont win this argument the league changed the rule because of THAT PLAY..so what you think they didnt discuss all that? we are talking the saints the moment in the game BREES and the ridiculousness of how obvious that was and they could not do anything about it.. its why they caged the rule and I AGREE..

sure none of want more stoppages and more refs involved but I can remember plays over the years that this rule was needed in big games and wasn't available.. its not just for call on PI , also NON Calls and while they have it viewing they can catch other fouls...

I get why this can be a bad idea but IMO it will pay dividends..

I feel like if it's at all in doubt the original refs call will stand. The changes will only happen when there can be no other decision but to overturn it.

not how it works if they want to waive the PI they can and CALL THE HOLDING, yes they are allowed to call any other infraction during the challenge..read the rule..the team throwing the flag has to keep this in mind because it can backfire and flag could go the other way..

I know what you are saying. But do the refs have the ability on the replays to make the determination that the ball wasn't catchable or are they only reviewing to confirm if contact was made while the ball was in the air?

The replay rules may be written the way it was called and if so then the coaches need to be smarter and only use the flag in cases where the rep can overturn the calls.
In a review like this, everything is fair game and up for interpretation by the ref. A defensive PI could be changed to an offensive PI call. Or a completed pass with a questionable PI call could be changed to no PI put an incomplete pass. Anything is possible with this rule being implemented.

This is not how football (or sports) work. You did exactly what I said you shouldn't do. It's poor logic. It's easy to fall into that trap, but you shouldn't do it.

There is no such thing as THE play, THE call, THE anything. It's the whole game that matters.
