Do Not Expect Big Foolish Moves in FA

The way our roster is constructed, many are looking at the wrong positions and will be disappointed.
  • WR- Lamb is among the highest paid players. We need to stagger contracts by pairing him with a rookie and/or a low cost, not so flashy veteran.
  • DT- Osa is now a highly paid DT, somewhat unusual in Dallas. Look to see him paired with a rookie and possibly a low cost free agent for the rotation.
  • DE- Parsons is about to become the highest paid DE in football. You cannot pay a tier 1 free agent. We already have Williams and Kneeland on rookie contracts. Expect another rookie in the rotation and possibly DLaw or a DLaw type tier 2/3 free agent.
However, we do not necessarily want to pop another rookie into the OL this year while hoping for second year jumps from Beebe and Guyton. A starting RG is a position worth paying free agent money to, and I think we will.
I also expect us to sign a tier 2/3 RB like Dowdle or another vet to pair with a rookie, while both Malik Davis and Deuce Vaughn try to be #3 in the rotation.

That may be it in free agency until we do our usual depth low cost signings of guys like Lawson-DE, Kendricks-LB.

This draft is deeper at positions we are already paying, which is good. Don’t expect Jerry to sign star free agents to bigger money than they deserve at positions where we already have big money invested.

The positions we need established starting free agents the most are OG and ILB, and then veteran depth in lower cost, role players at DT, DE, LB, CB, RB, WR. And we need to find a veteran backup at QB.
Disagree. RB, WR, DT are positions of need. The draft has players to fill those positions. The draft is deep for positions we need.

Th
so this means like 8-9 record next year?
That may be the case regardless. Do you think we would be headed in the right direction if we signed high priced WRs, DEs, and traded draft picks for others? If you want to win, you have to build the right way.

If we had no pass rush, I’d want to pay a young stud. If we didn’t have Lamb, I’d want to pay a top guy. We need to balance highly paid stars with younger hope to be stars on rookie contracts and build our OL and DL and find role players who sign for more than 1 year.

I think that’s what I said. That’s why we won’t spend huge money on RB, WR, or DL in free agency. We need those guys, but we don’t need 2 DTs or DEs both making 20-30 million per year. Keep drafting guys so when Lamb moves on, you are ready to pay the next star WR.

That's a relief. The Cowboys make enough big foolish moves extending certain players-no need to make them on outside FA too.

Not including FA to build a roster is the big foolish move we do every year.

And i expect it to happen this year again. Just because the FO doesnt have the people with knowledge how to use FA the right way.
They just copy/paste their approach from others but dont understand why those people do it a certain way.

And we already signed an average DT to a top notch contract. So we already have one big foolish move.

I don’t expect big moves

I expect competence and signing quality players that either can start or be key rotational pieces

That’s all I ever wanted….not unproven 8 year vets
I do think you wanted to use "demand" instead of "expect"?!

Because if you know our FO (which i think you do) you cant expect from them the things you want.

Don't have the people the people is Jerry!

Don't be surprised if one of these positions is filled with 12 ..........OLine, LBer, or CB. Remember Jerry is trying to fill a "void" and to me, that means an open starting premium position he can look back 7-8 years and say "I got this one right".

In other words, Jerry wanna be able to say we had our selected player graded X number grades ahead of where we drafted him.

It is good that Jerry does love the game and his players are protected with loyalty.

Otherwise he would just go to Brazil and use citric acid to extract 98% gold and just pour gold bars. Blue and grey gas was an efficient alternative until money and control hit the capital.

The truth about any quality roster construction starts with knowing exactly what kind of team you’re trying to build. Without that you are just playing fantasy football…just gathering players.

So if the Cowboys FO plans on major roster upgrades - with or without big FA signings- they need to start first with knowing exactly what kind of team they are trying to be. That wasn’t clear last year.

I never expect Jerry to spend money in free agency.
That yacht has sailed, lol
This ain't the 1990s.

Has not been clear for several seasons.

I don't disagree with your logic, but at the same time why free up $60 million in CAP space if you're not going to use it? Why push $37 million of Dak's contract down the road when he is coming off a non-contact injury, and his worst year as a professional if you don't need the money to sign another player? Unless they are planning on giving Micah a front loaded deal, all that CAP space makes no sense. And no one does front loaded deals.

The Cowboys are sitting on $54 million in CAP space now and once the extend Micah they will have at least $60 million. They must have a plan for that money. Perhaps they will look to sign some tier 2 free agents to one year deals? I expect that will want to keep about $20 million in their pockets to roll-over, but otherwise they have to have some idea of something. The Cowboys must have some free agent targets they are looking at other than the usual vet minimum type players.
