Do we care about integrity sports?

Article in USA Today asked the question, do we care about integrity in sports? With Vick and his deal, with cheating officials in the NBA, with Bonds and Steroids in MLB, do we really care or do we just want to see the TDs, the dunks and the HRs? Are these things important enough to stop watching or do we just want to stop hearing about it and watch the game, real or not?

Good point. It depends on what you mean by integrity.

Pretty much what I was thinking. It hasn't been a good year, but I wouldn't consider it so bad that the entire league is run by criminals.

However, if it DID get that bad (which I don't see happening), I would just watch more HS & college football.

I think we all have a certain breaking point of what we find acceptable and what we don't. I do know people who were long time fans of football but have turned away from it. Myself at one time I was a big fan of baseball and basketball but because of a few things that have happned over the years I now only watch if I have nothing better to do and have not watched more than 5 min of an NBA game in over 2 years

I stopped caring about n'Ba for just that reason. There aren't enough Tim Duncans, etc. left to class up the product. Maybe someday, there will be.

It would depend on where the "lack of integrity" lies with. Is it few bad apples or entire league or league itself? Currently, my opinion is, few bad apples, therefore, I will continue to watch it. But, if it was a league-wide problem then yes, I would not watch it.

I pretty much stopped watching the NBA about three years ago because I felt it lacked any integrity. I watch some playoff games, but I used to watch about 120 games a year not counting playoff games and attended about 20-25. (sometimes in different cities) I always felt there was issue within the game, but it really started to bother me about the time the Kings got ripped off against the Lakers in the playoffs. I hate the Kings three times as much as I hate the Lakers, but that really rubbed me the wrong way. Of course, when the NBA calls (or doesn't call) fouls based on who the player actually that in involved. That pretty much throws any integrity out the window. When I saw David Stern talking yesterday on the news, it just made me sick. As far as I'm concerned, it is David Stern and Stu Jackson who open the door for this type a thing to happen. When you allow games to be called in certain ways based on anything (players, teams, etc) then you gray the line in determining what is being called fairly making it just that much harder to tell when someone is crossing the line.

Shaq got away with murder at times during his career and it was because Shaq was the biggest (literally and figuratively) player in the NBA. They did the same thing for many other players also over the years.

The NBA has already chased me away with the inmates running the asylum.

The NFL is at least trying to weed out the troublemakers, so I'll stick with them until they don't.

If enough people were to get tired of it and tune out then there is no product. I know many like to say the league gets their money from TV revenue but the networks will not stay with them without the fans tuning in.

You have the choice.

You can't make up anyone else's mind, but you can make up your own.

Indifference does nothing to change things.

Absolutely I do - as it relates to the play on field, and whether or not the records of yesteryear mean anything any longer. As it relates to sports "integrity", Vick's issues are a non-issue because they have no bearing on the actual sport.

But, Steroid abuse, fixing games - these things are serious bidness.

Yes. Did you read the whole post, little fella? I clearly stated that it was in relation to integrity on the field. So spare me your clever little dictionary.com reference that talks about ethical and moral values. That is not the sports "integrity" I was talking about - and I was pretty clear about that, and careful to phrase it the way I did.

Try to keep up.

It is all just a reflection of society. No I do not care enough to stop watching.
There are always going to be bad apples and people who are not doing the right things, it always has been like that and always will, the difference now is everyone on the planet will hear about it.

The sad thing is for every crooked official, or Dog fighting QB there are 10 guys who are up standing and make positive contributions to society, but of course we do not hear about those guys cause it dont sell papers.

without integrity sports will fade in popularity or reach a lull that can be hard to dig out of (NHL anyone). they'll never crumble though (NHL anyone).. this will be exemplified when you hear the few falcon fans who are more annoyed vick isn't playing than the accusations that he ran an animal abuse center
