Didn't we just sign LB Rocky Boiman, whose supposedly a stud special teams player? If he's really all that, what do we need Davis around for?

Do we get a draft pick for him if we don't match?

If so, how high?

Or should I say how low?

I say match it. Davis was an undrafted FA so we get nothing in return if we don't match. He has a full year under his belt at the position and will be better this season. If we had a deal in place to get a guy like Woodson to play FS then I would say let him go, but I would much rather sign him to the deal and draft some kid and let them duke it out for the job rather than just rely on Pile and a 1st year rookie. Not to mention that his presence on STs is undeniable. If we draft a kid and he beats out Davis then I'm cool with that, but there's no need to make this position any weaker than it already is and not matching the offer would be just that. I'd hate to see him turn into another Jimmy Williams or Oliver Ross or Ron Stone (guys that we just didn't give enough time only to be a Pro Bowler for someone else).

SS

good point...you didn't even mention how hard the dude hits......just as hard if not harder than Roy.....the only down side......him and roy the same player..both don't cover that well and both being on the field can hurt the D

well, right now he's the starting FS.
Not anymore, he isn't. I think that Bill and Jerry realized what a mistake they made. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been talking free safety all offseason.
Personally, I think he's more of a SS than a FS.

All indications say that one of our CBs will be moving to FS, and that makes Davis expendable. I wonder if we'll draft a replacement CB?

Of course there is always the possibility that a free agent free safety is still going to be signed. If so, it's likely going to be Coleman.

I figure Davis is gone. Lots of things can happen between now and training camp.

i gotta say let him go. even though he is a very good special teams player if he is gone there is an even better chance of us getting a better FS. the guy just cant start at FS in the NFL and expecially when our SS is Roy.

Cowboys | Jones says team not done in free agency
Mon, 10 Apr 2006 16:59:34 -0700

Nick Eatman, of DallasCowboys.com, reports Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Monday, April 10, he expected his team to sign more free agents this off-season, but not likely until after the NFL Draft (April 29-30). "We're not through in free agency," Jones said. "I'm sure we'll have the opportunity to help the team. I don't (know) specifically where, but my experience has been, as this thing moves along, we get in here after the draft. I don't know that it will be a significant signing or a high-priced player, but certainly one that makes some sense."

I so hope Dallas doesn't match the offer. Overrated special teamer/terrible free safeties aren't hard to come by.

Addition by subtraction - Johnson, Allen gone, Davis on his way out. If Shanle doesn't make it out of camp, I only have to pray that they come their senses about Bledsoe and it's a perfect off-season for me.

Let him go like YESTERDAY...

He pisses me off more than anyone on our roster..Well besides Pettitti..but he was a rookie so he gets a lightweight pass..

...then you better have the FS "in the bag" or else there will be a pile of Cowboy fly by nighter geniuses who will bawl about the loss of Davis.

Right now he is our incumbent FS who is versatile and has experience.

Some of the propositions I have heard so far:

1. A draft pick in the fifth round is better than Davis????

2. A CB is going to move to that spot. Who? And with the competition at WR we will be facing this year do you want to go into the season with one of your three best cover men at FS? I wouldn't be happy if they went three wide on offence. We only have so much talent in the secondary. I would be a proponent of blanketing the WRs for the first three to five seconds and take my chances with my defensive line pressure.

3. Beriault. He hasn't seen an NFL field! The FS traditionally covers the QB of the defence - anyone want to leave that up to Beriault?

Opposing defensive coordinators are going to use the same shallow routes to make Beriault jump up and leave the deep man. What's to say that a player who has been traditionally a strong safety is able to diagnose the play and resist aggressively jumping the short route.

As for being better than Davis? How in the heck do you guys know? He hasn't even played one NFL down!

4. Coleman or any other free agent. Well the brain trust better have a second option in a hurry or we will end up in the same situation as we had when Woodson went down for the year. No back up plan, a merry go round at the position and another lost year in the development of a FS.

All I see so far is alot of egg counting and no chickens hatching.

I say yes because Parcells loves special teamers and Davis is a heck of a special team player. Also a solid back-up at safety hopefully...

Too much money for a backup FS and we need to at least TRY to improve the position....Glad he's gonna make some cash, but I'd rather move on.

They'll let him walk, you have to at that price. I like the guy as a special teams player but after that just a mediocre safety to me.

2 year 3.5 million deal with the New Orleans Saints.
MATCH IT! Never underestimate his true value as THE Special Teams standout. Would we have let Bill Bates go in his prime as our ST standout?! The fact that he'd be a solid back-up at both safety spots is just one more reason to keep him.....
