Do we pick up Henry Melton's contract?

If he continues to progress I am sure we will keep him. Good DL is hard to find. We are getting close here. If Demarcus can develop then we need one more quality DE.
Melton won't mind getting a nice upfront bonus instead of playing on annual salary which is not guarrenteed if he gets hurt again. I think Cowboys may have a little more leverage here.

Do we pick up his contract? The guy has been on a mission lately and is playing at an all pro level. In all honesty, I thought he was just going to be a one year type of guy. Sure looks like one of our best defenders at the moment.

His style of play is only going to allow our DE's more opportunities at sacks. He has been doing a tremendous job of flushing the quarterback out of the pocket, or at least putting pressure on them.

All Pro Level?

What game are you watching

If Melton continues this display, the team should most definitely keep him (I'm sure a decent SB would lower the hit). DL takes precedent over LB (McClain and Carter). Resign Dez and run Murray dead and let him go if he wants more than 5/yr over 4 yrs. Even 5/yr is a tad high tbh. Leary shouldn't be more than 2-3 per after the SB is spread over. He would have to be let go if higher than that. The team has the 3 OL staples; can't overpay for the spares. Even a good spare.

If we sign Marinelli back I think this will make it easy for Melton to sign a cap friendly contract. This may apply also to Ro McClain.

To free up some space maybe they can renegotiate Romo's and Smith's contract to be pushed up to 2015-2016. Thats when the cap will increase and we will have significant cap space to sign who we want to.

If Melton puts together another 5-6 games like those last 2, then he is a serious bargain at 9 mill

And people really need to stop thinking we can't pay Dez, Murray, or Ro if we do this.

Totally agree. A passrusher at 9 million year is cheap compared to what others make. Heck, Ware is getting 10 million a year. I would rather pay Melton 9 million than pay Carr 10 million next year.

4 sacks in 6 days... for an interior lineman that is pretty close to All Pro.

5 sacks in 9 games

Next youre gonna tell me Weeden is all pro because he through 1 TD in his last two passes Sunday vs the Cards.....

I would re-do his deal and give him some upfront money, lower his cap hit and add a couple years.

Not at 9 mill. I still view him as a rotation player not an every down player.

On the other hand, Ro Mclain has been really bad the last 2 games.

He doesn't anchor very well against the run at all. He is beating guys into their pass sets but he is not making them miss on their run blocks.

That being said if he keeps on getting pressure like that for the rest of the year, the team is going to have a tough choice to make.

For an interior lineman 5 sacks in 9 games is huge. The only two interior linemen with more sacks are Tim Johnson and Marcell Darius and Marcell Darius (the leader among DTs) only has 7, 2 more than Melton. Only 9 DTs have more than 3 sacks, with Gerald McCoy also having 5. When you can be talked in the same sentence as guys like Darius, McCoy and Johnson you know you are doing something right. All Pro level maybe not... but certainly Pro Bowl level.

P.S. Please know what you are talking about before talking again :) thanks :)

Melton has played 250 snaps through 9 games. Suh has played 430 through 8.

He has been excellent and I hope we keep him - with a new contract that is more team friendly.

No way do we get him on a more team friendly contract.

Yeah its one thing about this defensive line....just from watching them this first season......I think there's some good guys on that line. Some hard workers. But there's only ONE elite talent on that line. That on his best day can start on any defensive line in this league......and that's Melton. He's the only legit playmaker we have on that line. Not the only good one we have. The only premiere talent. And he's getting better every week. I hope Lawrence becomes that guy. I think there was a time when Spencer was that guy. But coming off the formation change, age and injury.....I think he's just a above average talent on that line. But he too is also getting better with each week.

Melton is a BEAST. Crawford has potential as well. He's been making plays out there.

Leary is far from a spare. He has All Pro potential.

It's going to be a tough call. If he keeps playing like this, you're going to have to pick up the option or let him walk. He's not going to renegotiate unless you add years and guaranteed money, at which point you're extending him past 30.

If he keeps improving, i think it'd be unwise to let him go. Pick up the option, and you have a healthy rotation at the 3 next season, with Coleman perhaps improving.

Carter I think we can let walk, what has he really done the last two weeks or even the last 9 games.

He's looking good so far, but I don't look to make this decision until the season ends. Far too much football to be played, but Melton is seemingly improving each week.
