Emotionally everybody's in but what does your mind say?
I believe I am shocked at this comment by you. Surely you read this board before posting. Very few threads go unscathed when it comes to being positive about this team. You should know that as well as anyone here. So when you say everybody's emotionally involved, I beg to differ.
A point was made about 7 or 8 years ago that the "realists" were people who were guarding their emotions by surrendering to the negative, so when the team failed, their feelings would not be hurt to the same degree as a die-hard fan. I don't exactly believe in that.
But, I do believe there are posters who continue their gripe crusade at every turn, for a two-fold reason.
First, because the odds are in favor of the team not succeeding to the heights the grousers suggest. Super Bowl or bust. But it will never be because of player A's incompetence, or player B's salary. They are laser focused on a mantra, and, like the people at the airport in yellow sheets and finger cymbals, they press their religion cavalierly.
Second, and this is what I consider to be perhaps the vilest position of all. The team will fail, and the poster takes that position to claim some insight or authority on this team at a later date. You will see when the team goes out and does something unexpected in a positive manner, those folks become crickets for a few days. Or at best they are rating the success as if the team beat a crappy team and the feat was not noteworthy.
The Vikings game comes to mind. They were 8-1 going into the Dallas game. The handwringing set were out in force before the game. But the caveat was dropped when they claimed Cousins was a crappy QB. So, no matter what, they were covered.
So when you say everybody's emotionally involved, I suggest there is a subset of posters who have accepted 26 years of defeat and have succumbed to an alternative reality as a "fan." A Band-Aid of adversity.
