4th was a high price for what he was. However he is still under contract for two years

I think 80-100 catches over two years is pretty good production for a 4th round pick. Will Mingo get that?

I doubt it and honestly I'm not sure number of catches is really a quality indicator. If he gets pushed into regular snaps because the Cowboys fail to actually address the position he will get 80+ catches with ease, but volume doesnt always mean good play. Even if he turns into a plus blocker he probably needs to average about 1.2 yards or more per routes he runs to be more than an average replacement you can find for cheap on the open market. This year he averaged about .62 Y/RR which was 178th in the league.

Typically I would say a 4th round pick that can be a rotational player and contribute on special teams can be considered a good use of the pick, but with only two years of control Mingo probably needs to exceed those expectations to be considered a good acquisition.

4th is where you are really hoping to find cheap labor

A fourth-round pick is just too much for a WR who hasn't done anything. If we had given up a fifth, I would have felt much better about it, especially since we are expected to get three extra fifth-round compensatory picks.
The 4th round picks are just so valuable. I am not sure why Jerry is giving them away like candy.

This was a guy who lost his playing time to a practice squad player in Carolina. Then he came here and did nothing. Stop trying to will this trade into usefulness. It was about as useful as Jerry trading a 4th for Lance and by extension making him one of the most expensive backup QBs in the NFL.

I dont disagree, but trading for a guy 2 years in is a little different than drafting a player and getting a full rookie contract of cheap control. If they wanted a cheap labor guy with some size that could be developed and contribute early on ST for that pick it would have been smarter to just wait until the draft. Expectations are going to be a little higher for Mingo due to the clock ticking.

I mean cheap labor as in a guy you are hoping to get 4 decent on a very cheap contract

the trade was made at a time where there was a good chance we could be picking in the Top 10

That made the fourth rd pick worth a lot more than if we were picking 20 and later.

Mingo was NEVER worth that

Generally speaking when teams cut and run on high draft picks it is a bad sign. Now we have this FO trying to prove they are the smartest guys in the room again. How has that worked out the last 30 years?

The only way I see Mingo having any success is if they move him into the slot position. He has a big enough body to help with LBs and DEs while also being a possession-type receiver. But, to answer the original question, no, I don't think he'll ever be worth the fourth that was traded for him. I thought he went at least 2 rounds too early when he was drafted. Hopefully I'm wrong and he turns it around next year.
